Oddly enough I I that's my fault I was sorry about that this it this presentation brought to you by SCORE. We'll talk about score a little bit. If you're connected with SCORE LA, you're probably getting all sorts of cool e-mails. We'vebeen on a few of their web and we thought a few other webinars and we've been on a few very awesome information. Make sure you stay connected to them.
Today we're going to talk about how to make your website more profitable.
We're going to make couple of assumptions: that you have a Website. If you don'thave it right now, if you're about to. If you don't have one, take notes.
But there we go we're going to start with a couple of marketing tips because we want to make sure that everyone is at the same level of where where chatting about.
And when we talk about Websites and what they should be able to do we start with our coaching clients. We start getting this, what you're seeing on the screenright now. It is a good picture of their brain. And understand, this is the center of your business; this is the hub of the life of it. We do webinars on social media and when we talk there our whole goal through social media is to get people to your website.
So now that we've we've sat through those quotes or seen you know a whole bunch of ways to get people to your Website, let's talk about how it's going to work. Our world has changed in the last 3 months, yes?
So let's let's approach things from that point of view. We've got all sorts of presentations. Every one of them, including this one, has been updated to include a COVID-19 point of view from for business so we're going to talk about that a little bit.
Just before the Civil War, Charles Darwin wrote this book called Origin of Species ,and he was talking about the origin of species and evolution and hiscomments were that it isn't the strongest or the most intelligent but the ones that are able to adapt. Now that's really good news for your business because we know that the folks listening to us here are small business owners and as a small business owner you're very much easily able to adapt. Let me give you some point in 1905 fortune came up with their fortune 500 and since then 429 of them aren't in business anymore. Sso it isn't the biggest one that can make it, it's the ones that are going to adapt .so here's here'sa little We're going to talk about by the way some pictures of our Website.
We're going talk about creating your targeted message because once they get toyour site they really have to they're looking for a message and if we're not givingthem the right message or we're not.
Keeping our customer in mind and more going to talk about here customers and. Then when they get your web site they don't get it and that's not good.
Going to talk about a whole bunch of website myths to bust things that you'veheard because there's all sorts of weird information that always flows out therewe'll talk about your next steps and we're going to give you some brief stuff youlike free stuff yeah I raise your hand if you like Priest on we can see him publiclytonight.
If you've got questions a couple things and we will take whatever questions we'lltake you out of you in a mode we'll will ask and answer them ask them throughthe mike on your computer or like Sharon said before we started you can typethem into the chat Sharon is monitoring the chat thank you for doing that youbetcha.
And which makes it really fun when it's your turn to talk. Back and so it's likewatching her juggle 17 balls one. Problem I got at just a little about us we've got apodcast that's got a couple 100 episodes in it we're going to be starting a newone we stopped it in November because after 243 weeks in a row we thought weneeded a break took a break.
Our podcast it's going to we're going to be interviewing folks like you it's going tobe the marketing checklist you get just 7 minute 21 second videos that where weinterview people and add about their business so they can share transit with amarketing tool for you we've been interviewed by A.B.C.'s Secret MillionaireJames known Jack and Kevin Harrington who was one of the 1st sharks on SharkTank if you want to see those names from the front page of our Web site by theway marketing to your website get interviewed by people that are famous.
Do that and then you can put that on your Web site it would be for example ifsomebody is doing a Google search for A.B.C.'s You could millionaire quite oftenwe pop up because James Miller jacket was on that show interviewed us andwe've tagged it appropriately on the same thing with Kevin.
We do a small business break to get couple times a year next ones in person arescheduled in September and we have a common marketing plan so that's out ofus we've got 6 books about marketing in fact with the you know I noticed thatone of the slides gave them an offer.
At the end we're going to give them that. Free market does on it so you get tochoose which book we give away for free today. That's going to be your decisionyou know just by the way if you have a if you're going look at a screen if you wantto chime in on which we should give away free so your decision I put in there youknow marking checklist marking checklist to the social media book sales books.
You know human resources Well you know. And I just realized something that myi Phone the our our clients know what we're doing nice and I left they.
Asked sorry about that my phone was on I had to turn it down to vibrate theysend questions and in fact Celia seal it really goes beyond just texted she wantsales but that's about them and we've been interviewed in a lot of differentplaces.
You know a couple 100 in the last year and we've designed over 50 websites weare not coders we are designers we have signers that we use in fact if you're ifyou haven't had your site built we'll give you a website that you can go in andwe'll connect you with all sorts of designers that we have vetted.
We know the worst thing in the world is if you if you come and cross one of thosedesigners that socks. And want. So we've we have been at a bunch of them andwe put together a site and and in fact it's called this Web site under constructionNo seriously so I'll type it into the chat Well what we've done is put together avery long.
Description of what you know makes you think about what you want to your siteeven if you have a site you might want to go there and take a look at you knowwhat we put together as far as what's the checklist.
And response and duplicate whatever you need far as you know oh I should dothat on my own site that's what it's there for. We put that site up because a lot ofour clients start because you know Web sites who use it's a marketing tool for usbut it's something that you can use and make sure that you haven't forgottenanything on your own website so it's.
When you go to that site you just click the big red button that says start Yep hereand you'll get our checklist just go through it but I was going through it c Oh Idon't have that oh that would be cool and you'll find all sorts of ways to improveyour website so there's a there's a freebie for you let's go through a couple ofmarketing basics because if we're not if our marketing is it up to up to snuff thenit doesn't really matter what your website does and that's that's kind of sad youanything here marketing is not and that's the worst.
You're When your customer comes to your website they have to recognizethemselves they're. And the the worst thing that you can do is say well I can sellmy product to anybody because you can't that's just not possible not everybodyis your customer we don't all shop at Wal-Mart we don't all shop it if any we don'tall buy it Dr rolls and we don't all drive Toyotas there's a reason there is a varietyin every product so we call our We're going to introduce you to the concept and a2nd we call your your avatar Harriet.
There's a really good reason for that but the demographics of your business thepsychographics. All come together to figure out who your client is and so let's talkabout Harriet and Harriet is a is a female avatar one of 5 that we've got and aftermy grandfather but it's a female so it's Harriet not Harry.
Now this particular Avatar I've met her 8 times in my career. And she's a she'sthis one goes this is one of the oldest ones I've got because it goes back to thedays when we were only a promotional product company and that's that hasbeen that way for a dozen years.
But she's 45 to 60 years old she her job is that she runs somebodies companyshe's the right hand person the guy that owns a company it's always been a malein fact if I meet a woman in that age range and she she is the person that runsthe company for somebody else if it's a woman that she runs it for she's not aHarriet because I've met several but they don't fit the profile marrieds ofdesignates Christian except one was Jewish college educated Now why are thesedemos the same because I know what I mean to Harriet I know exactly what sheneeds for me as a vendor as a choir you know the 2 at the bottom are Harriet'sthe 2 pictures at the top or not the picture of Glory is a little older than when I 1stmet her but my phone calls with Gloria basically went with her you know thephone rings I pick it up Hi Gloria how are you great come to come to the officeothers do we need to talk about jackets click.
She has never heard me say Ok Gloria by. But I know this so how do yourcustomer is the better picture that you've created of your customer the betterthat picture you can make the better your Web site is going to bring yourbusiness because as you create every page on your website you have yourHarriet Harriet's in mind.
And it will better serve them which means it will better serve you your websiteisn't about you it's all about them you know but. There's about page yes theyhave to be able to read the pout themselves in your page so every marketingmessage that we create has to have them in mind when when we even whencharity Facebook posts or we're linked in post or any social media post we havepictures of our clients Ok Who am I writing to today that one and every time weread a blog there are or were writing blogs to our area who's going to find thisattractive Ok what do we need what information is that Harriet male femalegoing to meet so here's an example of how your demographics can work or howthey should work.
So often when when clients come to us they say that anyone and everyone istheir client is there are you because you are usually one of our 1st question isWho's your eyes your client who's your favorite client who's your most profitableclient but not all be the same and often the response we get is Well anyway andit's not really accurate as he already talked about right Walmart and Carson fastfood joints not sort of thing but even if we accept your argument that anyonecould benefit from your product or service there's still different periods so forexample on the slide there are 4 generations of women right we're going toignore the infant This is not a buying it.
And we can we can make the argument if they are in a big metropolitan cities likeLos Angeles or Phoenix that public transportation is an awesome or maybe evenduring this Copa time the choosing not to use public transportation so they onlyhave car.
But they don't need the same car they don't all need the the car for the samereasons they don't even need all the features that are the same in each car so agood car sales person is going to craft the message to attract each of thosedifferent periods even if they all actually need a car and the same thing is true foryour products and services all of these 4 generations of women they mightactually all need your product or service but your message to them is going to bedifferent because there are different things that will attract them to your productor service now they are the main demographics you know there's 6 a age.
Gender education level income level you know there are some maindemographics that work but you will find and then there's like 20 other ones. Youwill find that there are certain demographics they're going to help you target wehave we have a client there is a husband wife team that are photographers andwe figured out by them asking just 2 questions to a potential client they figuredout oh there that they are profitable possible quiet there's also the psychicgraphics that go into it.
People don't buy for logical reasons and it's you know emotional Why am I whydo I like Diet Coke instead of Diet Pepsi I don't know just that's that I have anaffinity for one over the other.
When when it was time to get a different car we had a Prius before and and afterI looked around it was you know I just kept drawing back to that brand just feltcomfortable getting 50 some of the go and.
Now our trade show booth you see there is is this the Lucy psychiatric help bookfrom peanuts we know that our Harriet's most of them grew up with peanuts.
And they have an emotional connection so that when they see our trade showbooth there's the 00 all factor and they all want to start talking about it it's easierfor easiest for us to talk to them about their business so after we win we aretrying to decide what our trade show booth would look like we talked to a lot ofour clients and you know we had several ideas and this is the one that resonatedthe most so think of what is going to make them what pain are you taking awaybecause they will run away from pain faster the more in the pleasure sowhatever pain you take you solve your website has to reflect that.
And the more it reflects the more it says I feel your pain to go to one of our pastpresidents the more it says I feel your pain by the way here's how we solve thatyour problem the easier it will be for your web site to work for you so you'regoing to want to check every page to make sure that there is a sidewalk sign thatsays on this page this is the problem we're going to solve sidewalk signsremember those there were miles.
We don't. In your let's digress to social media for a 2nd when you're posting onsocial media the whole job is to get them to your website so starting the processof their your posts on social media are sidewalk signs you're giving them justenough information for them to want to raise their hand and say oh that's cool ineeds more information they click and they bring it they get brought yourwebsite when we blog we share a snippet on our social media that says hey doyou need some or commission about this would you like some informational login which you like some information about social media would you like someinformation about how to create a low with this darn awesome and brings themback to our website.
So the more sidewalk signs that you have out in the world. The more effectiveyour site will be and on each page you want to have one sidewalk on per pagethis is what you're going to learn about us Miss Page We don't want to mix themessages you know we don't want to give them 27 messages on one page thatthat causes confusion and that makes them not want to buy so tweak your tweakwith your messages saying all right so we've made mistakes on websites Oh yeahwe thought 1st the 1st Web site the 1st thing we thought mistake we made wasthat we thought our Web site was done whence the results were turned over thekeys and showed us how to use our WordPress like your website never done itthis is a continuing process you know we spent a lot of money and time andmoney on ads trying to figure out you know how to make sales on websites.
And we let people who didn't know our business advise us you know for exampleseveral developers most developers are really good at developing but they're notgood at the marketing side of it so that gets difficult we figured out that our Website was more important in our social media and you know once we figured outthat getting people using our social media just as a.
Tidbit you know kind of like if you're a fish or person it's the hook it drops theminto the water but they 1st have to bite at it once we figured out that or socialmedia is really just an invitation got more people to our site and it made our sitemore effective.
We say. We have met with lots of developers. And since we're according to sign Ican't share a couple of the things that we always look for but we do always makesure that they develop in WordPress and you know.
As opposed to one of those free things. And there were a lot of myths that thatwere out there about Web sites and we had to bust them one of the time now Iwant to I want to clear something up today we're talking about your websitewe're not talking about the all of the rules we're talking about have nothing to dowith the mega sites that we all travel to you know Amazon New York Times YouTube They're they're in a whole other world we're talking about small businesswebsites today so these rules apply to that to your site nothing.
I love that graphic. So let's get through some of the some web site myths 1st itsolves all your marketing challenge. You know this is not one any one of yourmarketing tactics that's going to solve all of your marketing issues that you youneed them all to work together sometimes some of them fail you know everyWeb site goes down for a few minutes at some point and hopefully just a fewminutes it depends on your most in provider so you only rely on your Web siteyou know from that one moment when someone tries to go in refreshment atwork yet there are some large hosting companies that go down a lot more thanothers.
Since e-mail will will clue you in on a couple of those most of them most of themare gone bust were great what you do have to make sure though is that yourwherever your website is hosted.
Be very clear on how they back them up and we'll talk about that later than theyare but you have to make sure that your website is getting backed up by youryour host and make sure that their hosts you know they're backing up and it leasta couple of different places it's kind of kind of vital for your site.
Marketing goals for your website. That I'm using the header of our the you knowabove the fold for our page we want to talk about a few of the things that yourwebsite should be doing 1st as it has to communicate your story now for usthere's that one bank in Sharon page that it's Europe some people are calling itabout we decided to make it label it with our names because Sharon and I arethe brand for our company now I know Michael is doing a line of hair careproducts Michael want to make it my Or you might want to make yourself thebrand the face of the brand so that they know that it's you.
If when I still when I go to Huntington Post I still think of you know are notHuffington and emails that he or she sent us we've really on your voice on awebsite I still I read it that way absolutely but she's the the face of the brand soyou may want to change your about to your name.
You want to share business tips Ok whatever your business is you're able to giveaway some information weight I'm selling information well but some of those tipsdon't have to be specific to your industry if you are a small business owner youcan learn tips just about running your small business that would correlate to anyindustry it's just about running a business so by all means sharing those youknow we're we're about to publish a blog that talks about.
How the winds of social change are blowing. And a lot of brands have to updatechange names change logos now most I'm going to say they're there if there'sone person on today's video with supplies to Probably not but are this thisparticular blog.
We're targeting one of our one of our avatars it likes just likes information so it'san informational blog so it's we're sharing business steps and we do that and thefew different places on our site we have our own blog and we also have an expertspotlight where we put on blogs from some of our clients and other people thatwe know that have nothing to do with marketing but just business stuff so we dothat.
We're always looking to answer the question What's in it for them when I think ofyour habits when you go to a website but let's say you're going to Amazon justbecause.
In fact let's back up we just had to get a new microwave oven so I was hunting. Ilooked at several different sites and I was starting to compare website you knowmicrowaves and the whole question was well what's in it for me who has youknow get it to us the quickest compared to price compared to all of the littledetails of what's in it for me that was the question I was trying to answer beforewe made the purchase by the way I got here yesterday awesome I'm so happyyou can't believe the guy who yesterday we haven't tried it yet I know.
We actually have a microwave we didn't try so when you look at your page areyou what are you saying you know what's in it for them or what's in it for youthere's a big difference and the more we serve if you if you think of yourself as asa waiter or waitress and you know you go up to the table when you're going totalk to you have a napkin over your arm.
You know picture yourself with the not going to the arm don't even realize youknow it's service how can you serve them that is what's going to get you far moresales the next g.o.p. way that they can set an appointment.
Oddly not everyone does well. We have several ways you know there's a lot ofdifferent ways where we show how we can help and you know setting anappointment.
By Another thing I want to put up here and I'm sure it's further on down but thatdoesn't just mean they fill out a form some of that some of it's making sure thatyou have all the right contact information your phone number should be in theupper right hand corner of the front page of your website why because about a3rd to half of the people go to your website they really just want to call you andyou want to make it as easy as possible we'll talk about have to do that and abunch of spas.
Last you've got to develop new business you have to sell Yes you do have to sellyour product. Having having websites that are all just descriptive we have this theother day someone went to the marketing consultation we were on with him for30 minutes and we're looking at their web site and.
She do an organic product and as I was going through her website I'm like Ok thisis great it's awesome how do I buy it she said well we just have most people justcall us ha and the conversation quickly turned to what if they could just orderwithout ever talking to you would that make your life easier and lightbulb wentoff so yes you will sell your product as well and your service is a product so if youlook at you know marketing in general it's gotten harder it used to be rathersimple you know there were the there were the 4 P's of marketing but now wehave all of this internet stuff and e-mail and everything else that's going on andnow he just disappeared but so we want to talk to you about how you'remarketing your business so.
Let's say that you bought you bought some land you're building a house. Andthey deliver the roof 1st. Level So now there's a crane there holding the roofthat's actually happened so don't you have to do our neighbors they delivered aroof of the crane at their roof and they had built also some walls or even.
If you had one wall is that roof going to stand probably not to 2 walls of the roof alittle better 3 for the more walls that you have under that roof the more it's goingto stand with that and if you picture your business as the roof the more walls themore ways that you're marketing your business the more walls you put under itthe better it's going to be as a dent Kennedy's rule the more ways you market themore successful you're going to be now that doesn't mean you just go you knowcrazy a market a 100 different ways because we test every different way that wemarket and we grade our the ways we market our business there's like 30 ofthem we we check it every quarter we give them a through f. and decide Ok Howis it doing so well that there's the there's the graphic of of how we do it we have alot of different ways we do mark our business now we didn't you know wake upon Monday and let the switch and then you know do all these things right it's it'sa gradual evolution over time which is the same as it should be for your businessright you start with one thing and then you add another and another in and youjust are they working some follow some time back now and and remembereverything that you're doing you want is designed to get everything that we do isdesigned to get somebody to go to our Web site the whole purpose there.
By the way here's here's what we we've taken the opportunity to sketch out yourentire marketing plan and there it is on the slide right there it can get a little bitcomplicated that's just one.
Number 2 your website doesn't have to be responsive or adaptive. Yes this is thiswill kill your business this will kill your Web site if it's not. This means so these arethese 2 words here response of an adaptive are significant so.
If you're looking at your Web site on a different size screen so for example rightright now I am looking at a lot of Top Rank was showing you his smartphone rightwe have an i Pad so.
I dabbed is means that it just to the size of that screen right realizes that you'relooking at this screen or smart device the screen on a lot top or just right so itdops to the size.
Responsive is it realizes you're on a smartphone you want the phone numberyou click on that phone number and then it transfers you from the Web site tothe phone.
So that's responsive it's responding to the device it wouldn't happen on a laptopand a lot of talk if you click a phone number typically it goes to something likeSkype and usually it could be something else it depends on what you've loadedon your laptop but it won't go to a phone cause there's no phone on a lot ofcopper desktops so it's responding to the type of device and it's adapting to thesize of that same type of device now I I pulled up you saw a picture of our top ofour Web site his wife to go this is this is their Web site on the phone I reallyshould do a screen shot of this.
Yet but when you come in you come to our page are looking to pop the phonenumbers right there because we know a lot of people want to call someone theytouch the phone number they can instantly call.
We want to make it is very much responsive and as easy as possible forsomebody to do business with you the more that you can do that the easier it isall the wood there are several buttons across the top of ours and we have themost in if you scroll down to the coaching and then find out more scrolls down soif you're if your phone is not an easy place for somebody to look at your websiteyou're out of business and you don't know it so if your website is more than afew years old you really you've got to make sure pull out your phone make surethat it's that it's adapting responsive.
Google will say you know. The numbers of people that are going to your websiteit's jumping up higher and higher the people that are doing this on phones by theway I see people that are trying to ask questions if you're I'm typing in the chatPerhaps you think this is a chat so if this is the beginning then what some of youcame in a little bit later so if you hit the q. and a button and you have a questionwell answer those at the end if your question can wait until the end then pleasetalk them into the chat by the way when Patrick could see.
So we want to make sure that your sites are doing this number 3 who build yourwebsite doesn't matter honestly it does. It can matter a lot. We have come acrosswe talked to a lot of a lot of small business people you know one when we're atwork when we used to network in person and we talk you know quite often willsay oh well let's take a look at your Web site will put our potter phones will andwill pull up their web site and.
And it's shocking how much how much garbage is out there you know justbecause they they took a class I mean. I've taken a couple courses and andWordPress.
It's kick my butt every time I know enough that once you know what I know I cango into any page on our site and I can break it.
I mean I know I mean I can update it yet because I've done enough but I know I'mI'm probably out of the norm most of you most business people are not time tolearn the backside of the website you you find somebody they give you a pricethat's that's reasonable they seem like the north are doing.
But here's somebody injures them. And for every one of these danger zonesthere are people that have given us that have said well I've built mine overseasand it was fine great awesome We're not saying this isn't 100 percent we're givingyou some danger zones doesn't mean a no zone it means that the danger zone.
Was Yep. More often than not you know we overseas building there's a timedifference there's a language difference we had to rescue a client with a reallylarge retail brand.
Because they were using a European developer and it was going to heck so the2nd one locals want to sell you hosting they give you a really good price for thewebsite and then they they say you know and we'll give you the website for$100.00 as long as you host it with us for you know x. amount of years and theycharge you get 100 dollars 200 dollars a month to host it now the danger zonethere really is that you have to be careful where they back it up because theymight just be hosting it at their place of business and let's use this as an examplethere are several places around the country where natural disaster hits could bea hurricane could be an earthquake could be flooding a lot of different stuff if thewhat if your own site isn't backed up in a lot of places because it's posted in oneplace you're out of business.
Now there are some people that had lots of experience but still built them likethey used to they have never you know they only know. Huma or who are theyonly build a custom they only build h.t.m.l. which means every time you want tomake a change a comma to a period or hey you know what I really like to makethat word bold you can do it and it's and they're charging by the hour so youwant to make sure that your developer has a lot of experience and is going tostick be around or they took a class now that you coding that would've been me.
Except you don't except that I don't you go tick you know I've done well we'regood at updating then once once a site exists yet we're going to updating and notsort of thing but to start from scratch no yes and not our skill set and we'reincredible it at designing them we know how they should be blocked out motionwork by the way quick question there's a picture on the right side there do youlike this picture in the chat you like this picture or this one better I'm Sharon and Ihave a disagreement do you like the 2nd one there or the 1st one from with theother so it's either the the light background or the American flag backgroundeither way we had this is a disagreement we're trying to figure out which graphicsbut they're so put in the chat which one did you like better one last time this oneor that one thank you much like it's I'm going back to the I don't I don't like thisone or this one so if you if you are looking to find a developer will help you we dohave a site.
This web site under construction dot com We got so tired of people getting.Minute by news bad developers we put this up and we've vetted several differentdevelopers and here's what we mean by developing they have to give us at least10 websites they've done and we call Sharon calls all 10 and if 9 out of 10 saythey'd work for that person again they don't qualify they have to be all 10 it's gotto be perfect now you can do this to their want 10 of your customer give me 10here customers and you call them all now even better once they've given you cansay Ok what are the next 5 you want to make sure that your developer knowstheir stuff and that they are just like your website needs a response of that theyare responsive nothing worse than a frustrated frustrated Web site situation sowe put this up now honestly if you when you go there you're going to see we'regoing to talk about hey look this is we know reason this is free we know a lot ofpeople that need a Web site of your marketing help and that's why we put thesite up if this is a marketing tool for us but you never have to hit send if you juststart here use our tool figure out printed out decide what works on your websitetalk your envelop or this tool is there free for you this is a totally free thing playwith.
Number 3 big I can build it myself no you can't well one effect I have I have metYes Ok my cab. I have met one going to say civilian well.
As it was Boris and he was a framer in Los Angeles and it took him 2 or 3 years tobuild his sight but it was he had healer I I wanted him to build my site it was notgood but not to use that but the fact that I can only remember and only knowone person that isn't a developer that actually can build a site and that includesall those you know free cheap sites you see advertised you can have a site nowor.
You can have a site that is not effective yeah number 4 your loop speed doesn'tmatter. That. You know that your website has to load faster than a turtle can run100 has to go lower you know if it has to live faster than your old computer has togo faster than a Red Sox Yankee game which we well it's really cool we watch onethe other day.
Nessun is replaying all sorts of games and the game was a 4 hour game but theyknocked it down to 2. I didn't have to watch all those ground balls to 2nd.
Mondays are long you need to look after your teenager what you get the pointalthough the bottom of freeways in Los Angeles right now are really clear so yourwebsite the speed does matter how does it matter to you or Harry is right orshe's not sticking around to make sure loads but it matters to Google rightbecause your if your heritage is torn between your website that low in 4 to 6seconds and your competitors website that takes 12 seconds Google will showyou or web site faster than the show you're now ours ours loads at about 6.
And we know why it does we have a testimonials page that is all video. And weeven have a 2nd testimonials page that again is all videos. Reason we have 2ndpages that we changed our names several years ago and we didn't want to get ridof all the old testimonials that said the old company name so we put them on a2nd page.
But testimonials are vital to your business and video testimonials are worthdozens more times better than Britain testimonials So the more testimonials youhave on your site the more effective your site will be and but there is a trade offyou know that all of our.
Videos are hosted on You Tube and we pulled you know we pull them into oursite but it does slow the site down to about 6 seconds there is that tradeoff andthat one is very much worth the trade off we have all we have a very Biddy aheavy website we know that a lot of people like to learn through video so everyalmost every one of our blogs has a video and we have the videos talked about.
Where we were interview so that'll slow it down but understand it's there that is atrade off and if you're if the tools you're using slow it down a little you this withthis tradeoff will come up.
Yourself again I get stuck and was weird it worked I flipped through thanks. What's on your website doesn't matter well yeah it does actually but wait youthink the reason this myth pops up is we've actually had people upset yeah thatmatter you know I just I just put my we just did a j peg of our brochure and put itup there we just we just need a website so we so people you know know we havea website Ok.
I didn't duck but yeah it's not helping so some people make it focus just on theirbusiness are great they aren't getting the sale that's cool but what if because youunderstand the demographics in the cycle graphics of your Harriet you now focusin on what they want you know what are their desires their goals what they'reafraid of what problems you solve instead of having it just be all about youhaving it be all about them now your website becomes a tool that they lookforward to returning to our your blog.
Is going to be a tool that they can come back to I'm not sure that it's on the so I'mgoing to bring this this part up now. When we started seeing what was happeningwith code 19 we started looking at.
Bunch of different large companies Ok How are they going to. How are theygoing to address cope in one team and between our e-mails where we weregetting 2530 e-mails a day from companies that we work with.
Companies that for example make promotional products because we still ownthat company and we were getting notes from emails from every factory sayingwhat they were doing. And we noticed that they were putting up over $1000.00pages turns out it's a search term.
So for the 1st time since we built our website we added a new but do our Website covert one team and how there's how we did it instead of adding a page wedid one blog about covert 19 that we just keep adding to.
More information updated information you know how you get loans all of thestuff on this one blog. And that source Yeah and then we took from that blogpage we added a new button to our menu it's the only place on our site that wedo that but if somebody was is doing that Google search you know marketingyour business trends over 1000 we wanted a shot at somebody finding it andthat blog is like a 20000 words at least now I mean it's a monstrous blog.
But. Yeah you know want to make you scroll away about it so we're what we'redoing is creating a resource for our clients and for any one thing that might needus so you're going to after you know there's a bunch of questions you see there.
Where you look at it and what makes you different why you now that questionwhy you over your competitors there's a new question you have to answer. It'snot use it for highlighting Yeah it this question has always been there and you'vealways had to answer it but most of us in the middle of our sales process role insales we're talking about us versus them and communicating example.
Dominoes and shortly thereafter Papa John if you go back to October NovemberDecember and you're looking at ads for those companies they're talking aboutgreat ingredients and how good they taste and you know examine that to talkabout the experience Coke it hits many people locked up how.
Well I'd like a pizza but now there's that question of move somebody would haveto come to the house and. So the question they have to answer and this is the3rd question that that you now have to answer 1st is why buy it all we're in themiddle of a pandemic and a recession as a business owner you have never hadthis had to deal with this before every one of our clients were we've been dealingwith this for every one of our clients for the last several months we've beenhitting their businesses so you've got to answer that question 1st why buy it allobjects dominance contactless delivery.
You'll notice in the car industry too except for except for Land Rover. Land Roveris an exception there. We started looking at what was happening in that industryand the questions that they were answering instead of horsepower mpg it wasthey opened the 20072008 labor a book and it was like Ok instead of buying ourCarver says there's it's do I need a car well we can give you a car for Ciro youknow 0 percent interest Wrexham a month so they were answering the questionDo I need a car well you might want to cause you're getting really great financingyou know 60 months 12 months ago and most people were able to Ok this will beover by then Ok great I'll take I'll get the car and then the discussion begins yousee how you're shifting that makes sense to do you use your going there so thereare a lot of quick you're have to think of your clients and what questions are theyasking when they come to you ask some of your customers say what are youthinking what were you thinking when when you started your business thatmakes all it really just what were you thinking of me thinking.
Really Yeah and what's bizarre is that a lot of experts learn just just don't dealwith this they don't they don't it's not part of the design of the website it isimportant it is an important feature of the website but it's not part of the designso they tend.
Wow Wow. That and that you know that it really doubt that amazed me. Number7 graphically enough to worry about all the code behind your site Oh well.
There are 2 schools of thought there are those folks mostly graphic artist whodesign who took a class on design websites and it really has to be pretty andthere's another school of thought of coders heart hard line coders that matterlook because behind is works we fall somewhere in between those 2 it's got to befunctional and it has to it has to your client has to recognize themselves so here'syour quick 123-4565 when you yes there's 7 here I gave him a 6 some of the botof various expels that you need.
Quick take a screenshot of this one write your phone number asked me easy tofind always at the top always in the upper right hand corner. But it's all mycontacts age don't make them click twice to get your phone number so you don'tmake them click twice to get your email address.
If possible your name and your bio if it's not on the site you failed if you're asmall business owner you are the brand let them get to know you one of herclients updated her website in fact.
And I looked at her site she Schiffman a coaching Klemperer a couple years whichis a coach client for like 3 or 4 years. Anyway I looked at her new site saw herpicture on the about 5 but it doesn't talk about her and all the words and all thethings she does so she changed it right away do you have broken links.
Quite often stuff happens and a link just goes down so there Google has a toolGoogle this broken link finder and Google has a free tool that will help you find allthe broken link you don't have you know maybe only have good results a lot oftimes do you think it's when you imagine it's going through 150 something blogand they are all over me so we have no use a tool and we would tell you what thetool is but Google has changed it so we just say Google it ask.
Everyone scroll down to the bottom your website is the copyright doesn't say2020. 2 things here if it's a few years out of date people look at this and theywonder if you're still in business they wonder are you know that is theinformation accurate and it's one of the 1st place hackers go to see if they wantto break into your site.
If your copyrights several years old most of your back you know your. Blog andthat everything else might have holes in them and they can get in so thecopyright has to be it's kind of like turning turning on the lights when you leaveyou know if you go on vacation us make sure the lights go on in the house samekind of thing.
Has to be easy to navigate it shouldn't take more than 2 clicks to find anything onyour site that's hard that's really hard. For us and for us it's we worked reallyhard to make sure that you can do it there are a couple places where it's 3 butmore almost everything is 2 is 2 clicks.
Now I'm going to give you another tip you have to have a menu menu bar tomake it easy if you if you were to look down at your desk Wherever you'rewatching this look down at your desk and imagine all of the stuff that's in front ofyou I was going to make one of our websites I was going to make our website.
A bird's eye view of my desk so if you wanted to get together you'd hipnessstapler you know get together and all the various things on my day at my deskare going to be the various But now are developer Cynthia lay at the timebasically said.
She's virtually slapped him up so he really did and he said no you're not allowedto do that so many of ours. Is a copy easy to read are you using light gray on awhite background and there are 2 black.
Are if you're using a dark background and use white writing or yellow writing isthe font too thin or is it bolder it's got to be easy to read and remember.
Some of your some of your potential clients are glasses and we appreciate it. Thebonus there make sure you give them an email address don't just make the orderform they want if they want to connect with you amazing amazing how many ofthose don't go through the return of overtime and even if you do you give them aform give them the option to receive a copy of what they sent submit in the formbecause it might be trying that you see the form and then call them or emailthem back they have forgotten what it was they said just so.
You give them a way to get it back so they go right up like that by the way let'stalk about photos that are on the left is Mukesh Bhatt we keep that He's our he'sour biggest cat that's our count.
The picture on the right is a stock photo if you look at the one of the last do youfeel the war except he was going to get milk didn't like it.
Original photos you should own the photos stock photos can be seen in otherplaces. We had a client that was rebuilding their Web site their way mortgage andthey said what do you think I said Ok great which are those which of those peoplein the upper left hand corner might get a reworking with that those are peoplethat just picture you know to show that we have a lot of people working for us soI can just you know pick that really that dude with a really cool Armani suit that'son the side no.
That causes disconnect and in if you're if you've studied Neuro-LinguisticProgramming the way that you or you communicate with others. That's called adisconnect and the more disconnect and somebody's head was the the less likelythey are to know love to trust you and once they once you've lost their trustbecause those people aren't actually your people you know they're not going tocome back and give you know the chance picture on the right let's let's thinkabout that.
My question there was so you're using actual calculators and pencils you're notusing on the electronic stuff Well we do we don't we don't use calculus Okdisconnect there.
Are all of your buyers like young 1st time buyers know well why is everybody onthat end of the screen like under 40 to disconnect from stock photography in herchair so make sure that Harriet finds herself on your site bounce do matter.
You know has the mind you know to be on. And how some types how Tom sometype bases show up on signs of the they just so show up that way that's how theywere designed and there's sometimes a mistake there so funds do matter.
Don't use too many I think we have a couple of pick Yeah we have a coupleexamples of some weird stuff there here are a couple of examples where thecopyright was way old or they were using a Jimmy type answers are dudes.
Video you know we're going to play how are we time wise are we good. We are atthe top of the at work oh so we have work I know we are going to we're going toplay one video we'll try we're going track we'll see our works.
And Sharon's trying to hit the play there the more video that you have out of thetalks about you from a 3rd person point of view the better. The Christmas foryour side of the shuffle to be free.
I think. I.
Don't believe this you. Want to return. To the next. Camp Are you disappointedfriends or suffering friends bring everybody absolutely So I guess the show me agraph and they have their own and organic.
Elements embellished. So with that bit how much can you imagine what if youhad him develop the theme of these are just realised that if you had 1520different people on your site talking about you compared to you will play thevideo on the left you're talking about you.
3rd person the 3rd party validation makes your website a profit machine it's whywe have 2 different may do testimonials and most of those aren't even all ofthem we have a lot more on every one of our sites that in every one of our pageshas testimonials our group pages as testimonials our book pages havetestimonials everyone everywhere there's testimonials The more you can't haveenough the better always questions go Well one thing only you know if the coolgreat start.
When you I saw when I start you never stop or because then once you get a lotof them then you get to put in the ones that are the better ones and you canwrite you know not every one of our testimonials and them are huge becausewhen I we have a whole bunch of So You Want to make sure that you've got alot of video that's promoting you now if you want to see how to do it a reallygreat way of laying them out and good if you look at our our page you operate aknock on the quick the test once maybe you'll see how we lay them out andhow we use the description and just you can do the same sort of thing on yoursite.
Number 8 people that strong enough you don't have to update it very often oh.Yeah I heard you. Couple reasons and you know you talk about this or that ideayou know the truth is if you don't if you're not updating it then you might aswell just have your brochures you know frame and put the frame in the closetand close the closet door and the only people that will see you are people thatyou actually invite in which you don't do that right now invite in and open thecloset door so for example what that means is only when you specifically dealwith the u.r.l. to see it it wouldn't you wouldn't be able to find it by doing aGoogle search.
So it has to change or the search engine stopped coming back to look at it andthey stopped showing it to you or Harriet's. Right you want I really mean.
This is a this isn't in the in the we. Super secret manager at the hotel. Whenthey're there in more press every frame every Word Press site has this there is abox inside it that when the developers building it they check the box so that it'stelling the search engines don't come by yet we're not ready for you musinghow often.
They forget to uncheck that box which means your site isn't being scrolled So ifyou're if you're in the middle building or if you just just just ask go back and askor go ahead to make sure that box got to uncheck Can you show me where it isthey should be able to show you right with the box you just one little box and allit's just a they will be will be back soon it's a coming soon box.
The f.b.i. the search engine optimization of your site a lot of people want tocharge you an awful lot of money for that and if you're doing quite Or if you'redoing a lot of what we're telling you here that's going to eliminate your havingto spend a whole lot of money on on search engine optimization especiallythose folks that like to charge you you know $234000.00 to get started.
That's. That's a lot and if we were recording I would use a different word. Butwe are well we'll put it this way there are 2 people in this world that do s.c.l. as aas a living there are 2 people we have met that we we will refer to and the rest.
We don't I hear you know when we're networking events even now I'm seeingcalls when it's when a chance makes a messy all personal come in and I canguarantee you the 1st page of Google for your website they can't Googledoesn't make those deals Google wants you and I when we go to use Googlethey want to talk a wonderful experience so by giving delivering us a levelplaying field we will act when we type things into the Google machine that oneof the things we want Google will deliver those to us example.
If somebody was looking micro and I was looking for a particular kind ofmicrowave so I typed in what I wanted and it delivered me several options thatwere appropriate as opposed to my quit Google makes money when they sellads if we start using Google they can sell ads so there are no deals that theymake to put somebody on the front page now here's another Here's a here'sone that one way that one of these people when I call them on it get around itwell I can put you on the front page for your name well that doesn't help you ifsomebody is looking for Sharon you lost.
And they type in Sharon you will off of course Google is going to give themshare a new law so it lets you know you know really common name we don'tsay Ok so I realized that we didn't realize how common our names were untilFacebook and blog and trying to find somebody like oh my God but we reallylike your name is so common in this.
It's that we should be able to find you by just by typing happening so if theyknow your name that's that's cool now the rest of it. And we'll talk about this iswe get to the last 5.
When you are we talked about blogging a little earlier when you're bloggingyou're you're creating He words you're creating the things you're talking aboutthe things that somebody will will type into Google if you go through our blogyou'll see all sorts of topics that a wide range of marketing topics we've put inwe've written blogs about a lot of things that people look for on Google formarketing that's how that's what sci works it's you consistently letting your catyou know you're consistently updating your site to make sure that that you'rekind of in partnership with Google that way and say look here we have thisinformation and share it out.
You also have to update it well you've got to keep adding copy you know it's themake sure that everything is updated. Blogging I know I'm sorry you are young Iwant to blog I get it I look I'm seeing I'm seeing eyes real you know when you'reactually to do it anyway yeah so the easiest way your blog.
Google says 400 to 600 words we recommend 5 to 700 because they've beensaying 400 to 600 words a blog for an awfully long time. We know that thatnumber will go up our average blog is like 1500 words.
With you know the last the next one we're going to post is like 2000 Google islooking for. They're looking to deliver a great response to the person that typedin so if your blog is will cut will use the term cornerstone if your blog is going togive that person all the information they need about it let's say you are doingyou're doing a report about the Bill of Rights.
If you had written a blog that you know about and a blog about each of the 10bill 1st 10 amendments to the constitution and they were on your site and theywere 200-3000 words long each Google would say oh we have an expert herelet's deliver that compared to somebody that wrote a $400.00 word blog aboutall 10 they're looking to deliver expert information so writing it correctly andthen if you edit a video that talked about your blog to birds of you like learningfrom videos why we do the heroes you know this isn't just an audio where wecan just do this with a blog so you know I'm not one of them I'm I'm one ofthose people that likes the textbook I want to be able to go I read about thatpage earlier and go back really quickly as opposed to backing up the video 2thirds of the of all of the populace likes getting information from video so let'smake it easy for him so at video.
Number 9 everyone wants your newsletter. Remember. You were reading backwhen web sites are now. It used to was. Cool I get their newsletter and we wereall subscribers until we started getting 300 e-mails a day of newsletters andstuff that isn't what they're looking for so on the front page of your Web sitethat is not the most effective way to gather e-mail addresses and say hey if youenter this year you get an e-mail you get our newsletter so what we do insteadtogether e-mail interests that's a really good idea.
Here's 3 different answers. If you're in your college or still in 1900 a great go for.It Or Not. We're going to give you the concept of a free report and at the end ofthis we're going to give you a free report.
This is information that somebody is willing to say you know I'll give them my e-mail address for that that's something I really want to read that's what that iswhat is working now now I think on our page right now is what you see therewe're doing it for us c.e.o. or but we have we switch that out from time to timewe will put in our favorite and.
Online tools. We have another one that's going to come up soon I think we'regoing to use the code report I think how to how to mark your business very.
Drunk overnight change if you like that report you're going to get that at theend we'll give that to you. You know I was like Yeah now if you're if you'rewatching this live you know if you want your life versus watching a video ifyou're after say 2025 and you're still watching this.
You may think it may have just sent us an e-mail info if you are creative dot comWell answer be a still yes or. Right now it's the Freeh report it is what is so coolwhat's going to you know what does Harriet mean so much from you that she iswilling to train her e-mail address to get that information and this isn't hard Inoticed with my own buying habits there are awful lot of her words out therethat I am very willing to give my email address or because only lewd that's coolyou know I would look cool driving that car you know that goes back to lookcool you can sell me.
That's what that is so here's here's a few of our of oh there you go at a picture.Social media cheat sheet I don't take that step which is we have a 2020 versionyou know what if you're doing pictures you want to know the right size ofelevators.
By the way if you want that send us an e-mail and vote you off creative we'llsend it we'll send you the the social media cheat sheet we have updated anymarketing tool to help you build your business so we create you can call themwhite papers in your free information stuff it's something that somebody willwant that they're willing to myth number 10 last minute I'm letting my tweenager update all my stuff.
You know the average the same reason you won't let you should let your tweenagers and your and all those folks run your social media is why you don't letthem have the keys to your website and say Go to it don't turn them loose.
We had this happen and couple of years ago happened this was on a socialmedia pages wasn't a Web site where you know when we watch television ourlaptops are open we're working we're watching t.v. we're working you knowmultitasking and all of a sudden lower left part of my screen our one of ourclients Facebook page when posted something like that you just post somethingon a plane and you went there turns out Suzy name has been changed toprotect the innocent or the guilty had just been broken up with by Billy says heonly had a couple 100 been Facebook but our client had several 1000 followersand she decided she was going to let the world know what a schmuck buildingwas and she posted it that we were editors on the page so we were able to dosomething really quickly we took screenshots we deleted it we dumped herfrom being an editor and we text Mark Textor to our client who said whoseanswer was 2 words last one person runs with.
So. Don't give up that he's making them understand that your site is the mostimportant thing and you just just give it up let me give you a couple bonus waysto get people to your website right.
In our boot camp news talk we talk about this flower shop on VenturaBoulevard and in Encino in every day at the top they trained all the drivers tolook at their sign because if their name was on the sign they got a free rose sowe were trying to figure out how can we do that same thing to get people tomake a right turn go into our website from our social media share andchallenge me and cool all my Diet Coke.
So in April of this year we started doing this and I'll give you the results when Itell after I tell you what it is. We started putting Imeem that said you can winanywhere books if this is your name and we have a different name every dayand when somebody wins we put that name up and say we have a winner.
So since April we've had over 100 winners and we've gotten 2 new clients theysaw some social media sent them a book so our book after the 1st salesperson.
And that's how we get them to interact with us you could do this to remember 3slides ago we're talking about that report you can do the exact same thing onsocial media and get them to connect with you by the way I don't I'm I use awho's a Web site if at the bottom there it's called random dash name dashgenerator dot dash and dot info totally random I wanted to make sure that Iwasn't.
Prejudice and what whatever name it was you know I would start just thinkingof our clients or some fans want to complete a completely random Now if youstart looking at our at our Facebook pages the you operate a Facebook page it'sgoing to start getting really funny in late June and July because you'll start sayingthings like Adam and Eve or if your name is Bonnie and Clyde or if your name isBurton Ernie we're going to start having a lot of fun with it because we're we'rewe're testing it we've we've proven the concept were we put one name up.
Or you know the version you see that we know works we're going to see if wecan increase it now the question there is well what if somebody sends me an e-mail the idea I've never seen my name you give it to them.
This is the whole goal here is that if this is a sidewalk sign we're getting peopleto raise their hand and say you know I would really like that book.
Anywhere that this is an e-mail that hey I thought they named my name or papawas your dad or even if it hasn't which book would you like we're just trying toput it aside walked out to get something to raise your hand if they owe thatwould be cool you can do this so easily you could do this by tomorrow youcould have this up and there are all of our social media channels not not justFacebook I mean yeah starts on Facebook but I get syndicated all of them so letme give you another one this is this is another way we're getting people whoare our page in this it came from the concept of Easter eggs was or I wasreminded when the space x. White was was taking off and one of theirengineers was talking about one of the Mars rovers and they said yeah and onthis picture we even added an Easter egg we put a little picture of Elf on therocks Easter eggs.
People are now looking at the NASA photos and the space exposures to find theEaster eggs how can we do that so from the filigree Africa's Ags turned it intoour own easter egg and this is live on our site right now.
If you go and find the Easter egg on our Web site you and I think it's 3 of ourbooks then you can do this too I just put this picture it's one click I promise youit's one click to find it you don't have to click twice married No I didn't buryEaster egg yeah we want to get it is possible for somebody to go to our site.
Make it fine so you can put Easter eggs and say hey this is on earth I can find itnow you might have to try 2 or 3 different offers to get them to go to your sitewe happen to know that our books work we've got 6 of them on varioussubjects we know the people like our books so for us we've kind of solved thatone but we still have we're consistently creating content that we test out to seewhat people like if you if you own a restaurant it could be hey would you likehalf a dozen of our favorite restaurant you know recipes fine Easter egg Nowwhy would I do that says the restaurant owner because somebody is going tolook at your recipe and say that is way too complicated let's just go to therestaurant same clothes for you so that those are a couple extra bonus tips wewant to add because we're having a lot of fun with them let's give you some fastour keys and we're still just a little bit.
Some kids were fast start and we're going to give you some free stuff neverwhat you do like the sun Why do. We give away free stuff like yeah and I like togive away stuff.
Know your market down cold you might you might already think you do.Awesome. Take an hour look at look at your client list see what patterns are areare emerging interesting really.
The 1st thing we do with a new client is we start to talk well the 1st question weask a new client is what do you want your life to look like and let's let's makeyour business do that 2nd question is are who your customers and who youwant them to be who you want to play with who you know this is your businesswho you want to work with who's the most profitable on who are the ones thatyou know and not always they were answer.
But know your market because the more you can you can tell somebody whoyou're here it is when somebody asks you you know who's who's your Whoshould I refer you to what would make me when I meet somebody what wouldmake me think of you we know real estate agents that only like to work with 1sttime buyers when we hear somebody in the area that it's a 1st time buyer that'sthe real estate agent that pops up 1st we know other agents that work in atcertain dollar levels of houses there they are again they pop in our minds themore you can share who your client is the easier it is for them to bring yourfrozen the find the number to become an expert on your markets favoriteplatforms social media and everything that they're doing so that you can putmessages your sidewalk signs out there to get them back to your website wherethey're going to be they're going to feel right at home.
One of our favorite books is Think and Grow Rich and I make sure this wasthere just thinking or it was written in 1027 if it's really the basis of almost everypositive mental attitude book that you read started with the Polian Hillinterviewing 500 of the most successful people on the planet and finding outwhat they had in common coolest thing was being born rich was a lot of them.
But there he came up with 13 principles and we have several that that we thinkare our favorites but one of them is is having specialized knowledge or beingthe the specialized person in an industry.
Where he said we don't build websites but we can learn them there are a lot ofwe don't work with large companies on the market we're small businesscoaches and with the interesting a lot of people say I work with small tomedium sized businesses above it it becomes a cliché we don't move a smallbusinesses we narrowed our niche down so that we know who we want to workwith us and we have we specialize everything that we do is designed to helpthose people the more you can Mitch it down the more successful you'll be andhonestly more you can charge for what you do.
