  • Well, good afternoon, everyone. This is Don Turner with Sba score, Los Angeles. I’m here with Hank and Sharon Yuloff, and their presentation on generational selling.
  • I want to talk a little bit about score. We are a volunteer organization of about 200 chapters nationwide, with over 10,000 volunteers, including active and retired entrepreneurs and small business owners. Our mission is to provide a professional guidance and information to maximize the success of America’s existing and emerging small businesses.
  • We create success stories. Our services include one-on-one counseling business workshops, other website resources@score.org and presentations throughout the year.
  • Our workshops include starting your own business, creating a successful business plan, financing your business, marketing, franchising, creating an online presence, promoting and protecting your invention and many others. Our local offices include Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Luispo, and Ventura.
  • Thank you for coming. Do request a mentor@score.org if you don’t already have one like us on Facebook and tell other entrepreneurs about score and all that we offer. Yes, you will be sent. The video
  • And technology will work well.
  • Thank you very much.
  • Sure, that’s that’s your opinion.
  • Hopefully, it’s back.
  • Alright. We we are recording today, right
  • Yes, sir.
  • Okay, so let’s see 16.
  • This is, this is
  • for those that are are on. I’ll pull back the curtain. A little brand new presentation. So
  • best of luck to all of us. But it’s 1 you’ve wanted to do for like decades. Well, yeah, it used to be used to be part of our our boot camp, and then we
  • alright. So 1st slide up
  • something marketing related. If you are doing presentations, you should have an all rights deserved slide.
  • If you don’t have one, you’re going to be getting our email address. We’ll send you this content. In a word, Doc, you take our information out. You put your information in, send it to your lawyer and make sure it checks out. What it really says is that
  • any current or future rebroadcast reproduction. We use downloading photography
  • without the express written in front of us is prohibited.
  • Right? So no snips, no recording. Yeah.
  • Something you want. Ask. Yep.
  • we get questions as as small business coaches. We talk to a lot of business owners every week, and one of the biggest questions that we get is.
  • how did we lose the sale? And they’ll they’ll document it out, and we’ll go through it. But
  • usually what we find is that it’s 1 of 2 reasons they either didn’t follow up
  • or they didn’t connect with their audience.
  • And those are. Those are the 2 biggest reason we talk about follow up in a couple of other webinars. So if you want help with that reach out to us.
  • The the fact is.
  • no matter what marketing tactic that you use? You’re going to be telling a story of some sort, and
  • if you’re relating to your audience better
  • all of those marketing tactics are going to be far more effective. So here’s what we’re gonna talk about today targeting your
  • ideal generation, knowing who it. Now, that’s a decision you’ll make who they are. How do you capture their attention?
  • Anyway, you see that on this on the screen how to relate you’re gonna get some 1st steps and we’ll give you a whole bunch of free stuff because people tend to like free stuff.
  • The inspiration for this come from a couple of different things.
  • Our trade show Booth is is on your screen now, and
  • it it came from I had always wanted to do a trade show booth based on Lucy from peanuts
  • and her psychiatric help. 5 cents booth
  • We weren’t sure if it was going to be.
  • you know, anything more than something I just liked.
  • but it turned out to be a cool marketing tool. We sent a mock up to all of our clients in advance. And
  • you know, saying, what do you think? And of course, across all of the demographic?
  • Yeah, we have. We have 6 different demographic clients.
  • They all said, wow! That’s a really cool idea.
  • And when we built it and took it out into the field we realized that
  • it was an attraction piece, demographically for the audience.
  • You know, an audience. We very much wanted to speak to.
  • Another tool the easy button, which is always, you see, on our desk.
  • That would be
  • Turns out that is, a is A. The staple started using the easy button
  • just for a turn of the century. It’s like 20 year old marketing tool that Staples has used
  • but we’ve used it because we make things easy for our clients, and demographically they get it because Staples was good enough to promote it and promote us for several years.
  • So if you have a notebook, get out.
  • get it out, start taking note questions. Do me a favor. Hold on to your questions on this one to the end, because I wanna see how the flow goes, and I really don’t want to. This 1st time we’ve done this
  • the the next time we do this, if you come back it will probably change quite a bit. You’re you are seeing something that we very rarely do a 1st off.
  • so if you have questions we’ll we’ll handle them at the end.
  • A little about us. Our our company became began 29 years ago. We were one of those companies that put Logos on stuff, but we gave away marketing help as a bonus then, about 13 years ago, I begged and begged and begged Sharon to come along for the ride she quit her job in entertainment.
  • Yeah, and here she is. It gives us an advantage, because we we both have very different backgrounds, buying sales, marketing economics, hers. Hr, office management systems. Online marketing.
  • and what we figured out as we’ve moved along in in our the coaching programs that we have for our clients. We do it from a mastermind point of view. And we realize that our clients quite often don’t know where they’re going. And and as the Cheshire cat said, Well, if you don’t know where you’re going, any roads gonna get you there and we want to fix that.
  • We published 8 bestselling books a couple of times a year. We do our break small business, breakthrough boot camp.
  • and we speak on stages all over North America, and we mentor a lot of small business owners to understand the keys of getting what you want for your business. What’s really important. There, we’ll do just a little coaching here. A lot of you have started your business, and your business takes over your life. But the. But you really started your business to serve your life.
  • Keep an eye on on what is happening in your business that way, and you you want to rebalance so that your business is serving your life, and you get the life that you want for you and your family.
  • What we’ve realized. We’ve moved from Los Angeles. In fact, this picture is taken from our our Dodger season tickets we’ve gone from La we were in Sedona for 8 years, and now we’re on the eastern shore of Maryland. But no matter where we’ve moved to, we’ve realized that
  • we co only coach small business owners who are really good at what they do. And we talk about
  • the science behind niche marketing. And that’s where this comes into play.
  • Our clients call us again. They’re easy button.
  • We’re their 1st call, so they don’t need a second call, or sometimes David, our cat, will answer the phone, and he pretty much just ignores them.
  • So who likes free stuff?
  • If you do like free stuff, put a a note, just put free stuff in the chat, and I want to make sure that that chat is working. And we we want to give you some stuff.
  • 1st thing that you get is a a brand new thing, hey, Don? This is new
  • over the next 6 weeks on Thursdays. If you would like a special report that comes out.
  • you’ll get 10 articles over the next 6 Thursdays. Some examples are on your screen. They’ll be all over the map for different things. That will help build your business. If you would like that to get in your mailbox. Our email address is down at the bottom
  • fact. Sharon’s gonna put it in the chat if you would like to be the very 1st people that get this. That’s 1 of the things that you will send us an email and say, I want this, you’ll send us one email at the end of today.
  • If you’d like to be on a, podcast we have one. It’s called the marketing checklist view cast. It’s 7 min 21 seconds, because our anniversary, July 21. Absolutely. So if you’d like to be a guest, we send you the questions in advance. Makes it very simple. If you would like that, all you ask for those questions.
  • and our next boot camp will be in September. It will be virtual if you would like a free ticket where we put your marketing pack together in a day. All you have to do is say, Yeah, I want to be. Let me know when the boot camp is going to be, and and you will get a free pass into the boot camp.
  • All right.
  • So, deciding which generations are important to your business, let’s let’s get that part, because quite often we will hear the well, everybody that, or you know anybody that has. And the the way we put this together is you want to look at the demographics of who you want to serve and the psychographics of that part.
  • So imagine that these 4 women they all want to buy a car. They’re probably not looking for the same kind of car. They’re probably not looking for the same benefits and features of that car. Given their different age demographics here.
  • So a good car. Salesperson is going to message each of them differently in order to attract them to their dealership. The same thing is probably true for you. It is quite possible that these 4 women could all benefit from your product or service, even though they’re from different generations. But you’ll need to create different messages in order to attract their attention. If you try to craft one message that’s going to speak to all 4 generations, none of them are going to feel like you’re actually talking to them, and they’ll go to someone that they feel is actually speaking directly to them.
  • Now, right now we’re we’re in an
  • there haven’t been 5 generations in the labor force ever, really before.
  • we’ve been using. We’ve actually been talking about and using this slide for almost 10 years and we’ve watched as, Oh, wow! Look at that happening.
  • so there are still some silent generation that are in the workforce. Interestingly, our workforce people work longer
  • that has has in the last
  • 30 years has begun much more of a normal thing.
  • So you’ve got folks. Yeah, you’ve got right now you have mid teens up to eighties.
  • and the challenge is, we can’t sell to all of them the same way.
  • You know some of the names for for those generations.
  • some are positive, some are not, are negative, but these are the things that you’re gonna hear.
  • What is interesting to me. Is that right now?
  • The boomer and silent generation? Well, the silent generation is, is has less of a percentage of wealth because they’re older, and they are dying. But right now baby boomers have the largest
  • concentration of wealth in the marketplace.
  • So if depending on what you are selling you really should keep an eye on that generation.
  • Gen. X. Baby boomers and silent generation. They have compared
  • to the percentage of what they represent in the population. They have more.
  • you know, revenue, and they spend more which makes sense, you know, when you’re younger you’re not. You don’t make as much, and you don’t have as much
  • but just know right now the line is in the millennials as far as they spend about what they’ve got.
  • If you’re not sure how your demographics work on your clients. We have a demographic chart that we give to our clients. Be happy to give this to you. You look at what demographics are similar.
  • You
  • client, a caller, donna client B. Call him Steven. You are. You compare their demographics see which ones apply. And then that way, you can focus on on which generation
  • the other part of the equation that most people don’t focus on. We know most business coaches don’t. Is the what’s going on in between their ears?
  • What are what are your prospects.
  • desires, dreams, hopes, goals for the future? This is very important, because each generation they’re rather different. And most of it is caused by how they were brought up.
  • And the your idea for messaging is that
  • you want to use a brief enough marketing message
  • to just get them to want to reach out to you.
  • You know the this pub that was in London. They know which generation they serve well, obviously those that would have watched or watching Big Bang theory. They created an event that went along with it. For all we know, it could just be the the manager of the pub just said, you know, I like the show. So I’m just gonna do it because heck! I’m gonna have fun with it.
  • But what are you going to do that captures your generation? The generations you sell to their attention? It’s kind of the same thing on a billboard who is going to be paying attention to your message as they walk by it.
  • All right, big caveat here.
  • We’re we’re gonna talk about each of these generations. They are generalizations.
  • For the most part the numbers are going to be really accurate. But I want to give you an example.
  • Sharon is a genetic
  • Gen. X. Gen. X. She’s at the end of Gen. X. But she acts more like a baby boomer.
  • Yeah, you will see that. Not everyone fits into the categories. But for the most part they do.
  • This slide is because we know we’d have.
  • Oh, yeah. Well, cause there’s also the well, what about those that are not from this culture? Right? That’s a different
  • that lends a different flavor as well. And there are some. There are some reasons why some things are different. All right. We’re going to be playing a bunch of ads for you today because it’s fun. This is an ad that ran after the 2,004 World Series. The red Sox won for, like the 1st time in
  • 86 years.
  • all right. If you were in New England, or a red Sox fan around the country, you thought this was hysterical.
  • Everyone else kind of doesn’t get red. Sox World Series tickets, $5,000, my stereo, my TV, my car, my house. I’d give you anything. Go red Sox my motorcycle, my firstborn kid anything seeing the Red Sox win the World Series priceless.
  • There are some things money can’t buy for everything else. There’s mastercard $5,000.
  • Oh, crap. I wasn’t serious. Mastercard congratulates the 2,004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox, and reminds their fans that we have them all on tape. All right, guys, it’s everything. Let’s roll
  • money, it’s only fair. Come on, come on! The socks won the whole thing go socks.
  • Come on, Hi, look! That’s the way it is you.
  • I don’t think I said that. Yes, you did, Mr. Lee. No, yes, no, yes, you said, and I quote. I’d give my left nut to have the Sox win the series.
  • Yeah, it kind of does sound like me.
  • mastercard, proud new owner of 90% of New England and 50% of Dennis Leary’s nuts. You bastards.
  • you know, I find that hysterically funny because our red Sox fan and you know.
  • actually, most Yankee fans find that really funny.
  • Okay. Cross cultural, this one. This ad has no words to it
  • not needed. Nope, but you’ll see
  • how it works for Pepsi versus cow.
  • He’s willing to spend 3 times as much for a Pepsi, and he just leaves the 2 Cokes on the
  • sidewalk.
  • I love that and situations change. This is, this is current right now.
  • You’re acting so funny. What’s wrong, Billy?
  • I should probably tell you this isn’t just my complexion.
  • My doctor says, I have skittles, pox, skittles, pox.
  • Are they contagious?
  • I don’t think so. Contract the rainbow, taste the rainbow.
  • Yep, so that was from 2,012, and the challenges is, watch
  • what you do on your ads. They do stick around forever.
  • There’s correct.
  • So alright, let’s take a closer look at some of the generations.
  • 1st of all, baby boomers you’re you’re we’re gonna give you some stats and we’re gonna highlight. Some of the things that are most important.
  • Boomers are split into 2 different
  • segments, the earliest and the late
  • They will
  • act a little bit differently. Example. I am a definite late boomer, and there are references that we’ll be talking about earlier on that I would have no concept what they mean, or they wouldn’t, you know they wouldn’t help drive me toward buying something.
  • They’re much more, much more likely to make a purchase if they have a discount or a coupon.
  • Keep an eye on that because in a couple of other generations that coupon has to be electronic as opposed to
  • an actual coupon, most of them will do research of products before purchasing.
  • They’re the the 1st generation that has had that as an ability, and that does it.
  • you’ll see we’re gonna show you this chart for each generation. If you’re hiring them, you look in the on the left side at the top. If you’re talking to them, it gives you an idea of what you would say, and how, for example, if you’re gonna have a conversation with baby boomers, they prefer in person, except if you’re sharing, in which case you want to do it by text. Major events. And and
  • if you’re going to talk to, to relate to your prospects, understand that
  • to talk to me and use a World War 2 reference doesn’t work to me. World War 2 is black and white film. However, Vietnam.
  • the Vietnam war was something that was brought into our living room every night.
  • Every week they would have the the chart that went up. Number of enemy dead number of us dead.
  • And this sticks around civil rights movement TV shows. You know, TV dinners peace sign
  • that the cultural icons that you see there cover a wide variety. Older boomers definitely the poodle skirt and the younger one slinkies because they came about when I was little and the peace sign. So
  • understand when you’re telling a story.
  • and you want to sell to these folks understand what events
  • in history are going to relate, and we’ll talk about. We’ll show you a bunch of those later.
  • How do they work?
  • Baby boomers are workaholics, you know, they they want to their leadership is consensual. We want to make sure that everyone is brought in on it.
  • God! I hate that much. I hate that about us. Work and exciting adventure, which is why a whole lot of us started our own businesses
  • very exciting. And yes, we do love team players.
  • if you’re going, you know. Ads that related to us
  • here are for the early rumors they would get relate to this
  • Mr. Cow. Yes, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie pop. I don’t know. I always end up biting. Ask Mr. Fox, for he’s much cleverer than I, Mr. Fox. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie pop? Why don’t you ask Mr. Turtle, for he’s been around a lot longer than I. Me. I bite
  • Mr. Turtle. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie paw? I never made it without biting. Ask Mr. Owl, for he is the wisest of us all. Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie roll center of a Tootsie paw. A good question. Let’s find out. 1, 2, 3,
  • 3. If there’s anything I can’t stand. It’s a smart owl. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie pop? The world may never know
  • now that Ad was so
  • invasive as it were you, you will still hear references to how many likes, how many licks does it take?
  • Depending on the product? You’ll still hear people reference it. That was the ad that it came from.
  • I don’t think I ever saw the whole. I only remember the end part, the owl part. I don’t remember all of those other characters.
  • This is my job. I get to look at Youtube for for ads. This ad is a a really famous one that that got remade 30 years ago.
  • Some people have a deep, abiding respect.
  • natural beauty that was once this country, and some people don’t.
  • People start pollution.
  • People can stop it.
  • Now you’ll notice something else.
  • Ads were a minute long, and now they are mostly 30 seconds
  • Later in the in the demographic.
  • This is another one stuff, some cereal. It’s supposed to be good for you. I’m talking flight.
  • Let’s get Nike. Yeah, he won’t need it. He hates everything, likes it. Hey, Mikey?
  • Regular cinnamon and raisin life, nutritious, delicious.
  • Now life, Cereal and Fisher Price tour. I find another version of that. Everyone named Michael grew up with the hey, Mikey, that was the godparent. Why did you name me that
  • another really famous one? This has been parodied dozens of times, usually with somebody tossing their jersey, too.
  • almost to come.
  • Mr. Green. Yeah, you need any help meeting.
  • I just want you to know. I think I think you’re the best ever.
  • Yeah. Sure.
  • Want my coke.
  • It’s okay. You can have it.
  • No, no, really, you can have it.
  • Okay.
  • A cork in the sky.
  • I makes me feel good makes me feel
  • that’s the way it should be.
  • Say, Thank you. Whole world smiling.
  • Coca-cola! Ass life, father, thanks, angel, smile.
  • This was, you’ll notice at the end, it says, have a coke and a smile. That, says Coke Coke adds life. They were transitioning from one slogan to another, and they got them both in.
  • boy, what’s this stuff?
  • She’s a how would you relate to baby boomers and social media? All right.
  • Post this photo, or or one you know who knows what this is? When was the last time you used it?
  • If your audience are baby boomers, they will get it.
  • and if if you happen to know what it is, feel free to put it in the chat.
  • Here are some other things that you can reference that they will get.
  • Alright, yeah, they got it. Richard got it. Oh, it’s Richard the line, of course
  • Richard is an early boomer. If you want to talk, if you talk about yellow pages. It’s something that has pretty much disappeared from now, but we will get it.
  • This is this was something I posted just the other day our target audience
  • for our our older target audience. Well, from late late millennial to Gen. X. To boomers, they get this. This was on my Facebook page.
  • Get X, we’ll talk about you, Babe.
  • Brands report brand loyalty was the highest.
  • Yeah. They will prefer email marketing over other channel.
  • Yeah, share it. Don’t make me talk to people.
  • Hmm, yeah.
  • Feel overlooked that the note at the bottom
  • generation X has been millennial. Got millennials got a lot more attention and Generation X is kind of a sandwich generation. Didn’t get as much time.
  • okay. So so take a look at this. You know your work ethic and values self reliance. Yeah, you don’t want me to do any part of your business. Yeah, is there a way we cannot do this at all. You want direct and immediate communication. Do we have to wait? Can we wait and have a meeting about it? No, we don’t want that.
  • They want to know how they’re doing. And you know, freedom, time is is the best reward, absolutely things that events they’ll know to know. Oh, God, it’s only Wednesday, I know. Challenger. Oh, big impact. Yeah. Part. Also because I was a teacher at the time, so that that also lends a different flavor. Yeah.
  • Mtv started. Yeah.
  • See? Mtv, it started him for me. But but it it made more of an impact on you than me. Well, that’s because you didn’t like. Yeah, if it wasn’t, you know Peter, Paul and Mary, you didn’t care. No, my boyfriend had it on when we, I would go to his house, but it was never on in my house et cabbage patch sauce.
  • The yeah. The I thought just thought of one pet rocks was that one for you? Yeah. So we’ll we’ll add pet rocks in here and you can talk about.
  • Did you ever have a pet rock. All right. Don’t say that to silent generation baby boomers probably didn’t. Gen. X. Yeah, maybe not.
  • Of some of the iconic ads this one is is still quote, still, is there a.
  • When you drive to Wendy’s and order a single, you get more beef than the Whopper or the Big Mac
  • at Wendy’s? You never have to ask, Where’s the beef?
  • So that slogan? Where’s the beef? Came to mean.
  • you know, where’s the where’s the truth? Here, where’s the you know you’re you’re promote. You’re promising things that you’re not delivering.
  • So the the where’s the beef slogan still is part of the lexicon. Yeah.
  • This ad ran one time, and this is the yep. So this is during the world. Here’s 28 to 9.
  • So this was today we celebrate the 1st glorious anniversary of the information. Purification created old history. A garden.
  • Pure ideology for each one coming secure from the obeying.
  • is more powerful than speech, more hobby on earth.
  • We are one woman with one will, one more song, wonderful soul power, walk themselves to their
  • child.
  • On January 24th Apple computer will introduce Macintosh, and you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like 1984.
  • This was the first.st That was the 1st time Cbs on Sunday is the Wbc super lightweight championship.
  • 1st time that that apple started making their. We are different as as their
  • branding. Yeah, that was their brand.
  • Yep.
  • And that went through, you know, it still goes through this
  • social media posts if you’re going to talk to them.
  • What albums did you own on Vinyl Cassette and CD, because this generation oh, my gosh!
  • They had to buy rebuy their their music twice.
  • You know, I remember my college got the Internet.
  • You can on social media. Ask about that. If your target audience is in the generation.
  • what was it like when the Internet 1st came around?
  • By the way, I use the yes one, because that actually, yeah.
  • Now, here’s another fun one who knows what this is?
  • Put your generation. And now, if you are
  • Gen. X. And older, you should know what this is millennial and younger. You may not.
  • I want to see who gets it.
  • Here you go.
  • Kather got it. Good. Yeah, Richard got it
  • for those that don’t know yet. This is a. This is how we used to get our film.
  • Yeah, the the you’d pop off the top, take the film out, put it into the camera. Shoot your pictures that you would not know
  • how they came out, and then you’d have to see how they did. Now.
  • this is where we get the.
  • Take another picture just in case.
  • And interestingly, even with digital.
  • you will always have, you know.
  • older generation. Say, yeah, take another one, just in case even on digital.
  • because we never knew how it was going to come out.
  • Let let’s give you another side. I wanna I wanna train you here for something else.
  • When we train our clients to shoot video of testimonials, we always tell them
  • look. If they’re a millennial or older.
  • you can shoot 2 2 of these simply just say, you know, let’s shoot another one just in case.
  • and if they are, you know, forties and older, they will say, Okay, sure, just shoot another, because we all get. We all had to take that second picture. But now we’re shooting another video. Now.
  • the reason you do this for your testimonials the second one is usually better
  • because they’ve already tried it once. So you want to have a lot of video testimonials. So this is where it came from, because we would say.
  • Take another one just in case.
  • and you still do right, even though we now check it on our phone. But you know, to see if it was good enough. Right? We we do take another one, because someone’s blinking or not looking at the camera, or whatever, or you’ll shoot 5 or 6 or 7, because
  • it’s not like you only get 36 pictures in a in a role so sure shoot 6 and 7, and then we’ll just check and see which one works the best.
  • For Lenny millennials. God! They’re in their forties! Oh, my gosh,
  • They actively use digital coupons 1st generation to actively look for them and and use them a lot.
  • They want brands to be to personalize their rewards.
  • Me, me, me, me, me, me!
  • We have the technology. Darn it, use it. Yep. So keep an eye, you know, a lot of them will be very loyal to the brands that
  • will personalize the method that they sell to them, and that they act with. And it doesn’t just mean putting their name in the email
  • that that’s a pretty low bar, I mean, yes, do that. But it’s a pretty low bar, right. It’s knowing that. Oh, you’ve been buying this
  • product from us.
  • So you here’s a deal for that product.
  • You’re probably running low, right? Because you’ve been tracking when they’re using it as an example. Yeah. Also, the 1st generation that that really will respond to product offers
  • texted to them.
  • I will not just to know what I am.
  • In fact, I’m still getting. I had to. I finally opted out that blanket that I got with made from the T-shirt. I was getting texts. Hey? You can order another one. I just got the one. Yes, it’s a cool brand. They take your old T-shirts, and they turn them into a blanket. It’s awesome.
  • Yeah, with millennials never mentioned participation trophies. They they take it very personally.
  • 9, 11. An event that
  • will will go across all generations. But this is the one that they were growing up with it.
  • Columbine shootings, you know. Boston, Marathon. Whole lot of negative stuff. But social media platforms came when they were growing up. So there, since
  • teens and twenties tend to get the the cultural stuff social media was
  • biggest for them, in fact, because millennials embraced social media and video. That’s why all the social media platforms said, you know.
  • we see this is coming. And with with Gen. Z. Right behind them. Video is now a thing
  • and all platforms want to promote video because people will watch videos. They love to watch videos. Oddly enough, it’s why I have a few videos in this presentation.
  • you know, if you were to ask. So some folks out of
  • about reality. TV. This is the generation that 1st got it.
  • Oh, by the way, communication email and voicemail.
  • But if it’s Sharon, you get text. Alright. This came through.
  • I’m gonna I’m gonna say this ad I I didn’t get it. I still don’t get it. But it was, but it was majorly
  • major in their generation.
  • Hello! Hey! Hoo! What’s up
  • watching the game? Having a bud so but you none watching the game having a bud. True. True.
  • Why’s that with that?
  • Yo! Who’s that? Yo? You’re picking the phone?
  • Hello! What’s up?
  • Yo! Where’s Dookie? The dookie?
  • You over there?
  • Snack, huddle?
  • Hello!
  • And
  • so what’s up B watching the game having a bud. True, true, I don’t know.
  • And all of a sudden everybody was screaming, yeah,
  • Annoying.
  • Now, culturally, what’s in the bag? Lunch. Big Mac Fries play you for it. By the way.
  • Jordan, from the generation bird older.
  • you and me for my Big Mac, 1st one to miss, watches the winner eat no donkey
  • get in there
  • the net.
  • I think we’re gonna be here a while. I suggest you go get a big Mac.
  • This is for your Big Mac right
  • 1st one that misses watch as the winner eat lunch guys off the glass.
  • Here I shot it.
  • It’s me.
  • Get in there
  • floor off the scoreboard off the bang board. No rim
  • over the second rafter off the floor.
  • the window off the wall, nothing. But now
  • what you want is what you get, and God of the day
  • off the expressway, over the river, off the billboard, through the window, off the wall.
  • Nothing but net right?
  • It’s it’s the point. It’s those 2 selling.
  • But you know. Yes, I get it. I get it on that for sure.
  • Able to pick up good yards.
  • Okay, social Media, you could post this trailer
  • and ask who knows what this is? If this is your audience
  • now, I would like it, too.
  • so much better with headphones, and when I was when I was picking out which ones to use, I have to admit I played a few of them
  • great, though bottom one.
  • I had no clue. I had to look this up. What are they sitting on?
  • I I added it over here. No? Well, yeah. But it
  • these were the do you know, do you know, without reading? Do you know who the 3 kids are?
  • They do look familiar, but without reading, I wouldn’t have known. Okay, yeah, they, I recognize the kid home improvement. But I didn’t realize didn’t know, because I didn’t watch.
  • You know.
  • whatever it is shoot. It’s right there in that. Yeah, no, no, no. The the couch where
  • nickelodeon, the nickelodeon, started
  • after I wasn’t watching afternoon TV. Yeah. I didn’t watch nickelodeon, I mean occasionally with my brothers, but not really so when they had their nickelodeon awards they were sitting on the you know, the big couch. Sure. By the way, the link at the bottom, if you want to see a whole bunch of things that only millennia
  • do a Google search, Ktla. 32 things, and that that link will come up.
  • Well, let’s just play it again.
  • I thought this was a funny one.
  • I actually said, you know. Page, me page me.
  • did you ever own a patient? Never! I didn’t either, never on paper.
  • Gen. Z.
  • Wow!
  • They’re starting to work. They’re starting to have some money.
  • If your business is, gonna be around a while.
  • best get to know them well, cause they’re gonna be the ones that are filling your pockets.
  • Right now they still because they you know, they’re younger, they will check with their parents. So your message should be appropriate to parents as well, they like to shop in stores again. Interesting? Yeah, I had no idea blew me away. Yep, if you have a reward for a program.
  • you definitely want to show it to them, and they will. They’ll take recommendations into account when they’re buying products. Absolutely.
  • Major events
  • the 2,008 recession got them there. It was the 1st time that there was a a economic downturn in their lives.
  • These are the ones that
  • older generations are looking to is, oh, you need some social media done for your company. Well, they’re Internet experts.
  • which is nice to know and all. But they don’t have the history, the historical background in order to understand your business. So beware of that.
  • Interestingly, they were. There are parts of this generation that weren’t born during 9 11, then they can now vote. So this is the 1st generation that that is is happening.
  • Yeah. So things that will
  • be normal for all the older generations. This is a new thing, and Covid broke out in 2020.
  • They are going through school with that.
  • you know. I was listening to a I should have said this when we were millennials. But I I was listening to an interview today
  • by 2 millennial political leaders doesn’t matter who they are. But they were mentioning that because they grew up, that do during the 2,008 recession. That’s when they
  • that’s when they started paying attention to politics right to the 2,008 recession that the American dream changed for them that
  • going to college did not mean that you’d be able to afford a house and family, and that and that’s their their. They both agreed on that, that. They’re having to reframe, that I didn’t think of that. So you mentioned 2,008 go back to go back to my parents.
  • Silent generation, both born in 1927.
  • So they grew up during the Great Depression right? And that that
  • affected how they looked at money and planning and putting money away. Which is their entire life. Oh, yeah, their entire life. My my sister and I were taught, you know, value of a dollar and saving. And and you know
  • one of the reasons, my parents said. You know you’re going to work and put yourself through college. Yes, they were there if I needed them.
  • But the 1st you know the the 1st step is, how much can you? Can you do it yourself?
  • Right? You know the self-reliance and this will that will definitely affect Gen. Zers, for sure. And I won’t get political here yet, because right now we appear to be going into
  • very tumultuous time economically, this will affect them it part of that will depend on how long it lasts. Yeah, right? So
  • keep an eye on that. Folks keep an eye on the economy
  • like they’re not add that came into play. That will be part of their lexicon. It’s so easy to use. geico.com. A caveman could do it. What?
  • Not cool. I did not know you were there.
  • I had to search for this one the 1st one really. Yeah.
  • that was that was the very 1st one. This was a super bowl ad that I just thought was hysterically good.
  • What’s what’s really good here is that it? They’re using
  • Star Wars, which relates to older generations as well as
  • that’s
  • I remember really enjoying that ad.
  • Okay, it’s so.
  • Social media, you know, the early Gen. Z. Child, you know, childhood starter pack
  • not our target audience as much. But I you know a lot of the video games. You know.
  • you know, Ali, this probably speaks more to to my brother Chad, and he’s not in that generation he would know all about. Yeah. All the gaming stations. You look at the the gaming state, you know gaming things that are available now compared to Palm.
  • See, I remember, Pong, but, in fact, would you write down the word Pong. I don’t think he remembers Pong. I think that was
  • free his cognition. So now that you have an idea of what the generation you’re selling to.
  • let’s go into some of their their personality traits.
  • look under the category of who you are going to most sell to.
  • and here are several slides that that will talk about their personality traits.
  • Boomers think they can change the world.
  • It was back in the 19 sixties, rock and roll and everything. I don’t know if they still think. Well, you know, we already did change it.
  • Yeah, it’s changing again. You know, millennials on the other part, deep desire to make the world a better place. So what’s the difference between changing the world in a better place? Well, okay, we can’t maybe not be able to change it, but we can at least make it better.
  • Gen. Z. Is is very unsettled
  • and look you, you look at the world over the last several years. Understand that that will
  • that will make them very risk averse for those of you that are selling insurance. You’ll want to get to know all your Gen. Z. People early. So, looking at the the Gen. Z. Notes, do you relate to any one of those in particular? Or what would you mean? X. Yeah. Gen. X.
  • hmm.
  • See, I saw that lack of parental supervision. I was like, Oh, my God! That’s true. I did have that. But then I was the parent to my siblings. So my siblings didn’t have that they had needed. Yeah, because I was 12 years older. So yes, I was independent.
  • I don’t know that we’ve really achieved work life balance. I think that’s a i think it’s a fallacy. I think that it’s a you know, overall, maybe, but not in any one particular time aimless. I don’t think that’s accurate, either.
  • Reluctant to grow. See it. No, I don’t think it’s most of it’s not active. See? If you go by this. I’m probably more relate more to the boomer. Right? Because I’m right on the cusp. Yeah, I’m at that 1st year of Gen. X. All right. So I think you are definitely social cause, oriented distrust of government. Well, it depends. It depends on the government.
  • Yeah. So there is a cynicism there.
  • Thank you. So that’s personality type types, key events.
  • You know this. And this isn’t necessarily just
  • things that have happened. Internet coming online
  • has changed. How we look at things.
  • doing research for papers in school, you know, boomers and Gen. X.
  • Much more difficult time, you know, we’re going to the library and reading, you know, printed things
  • millennial. And Gen. Z. There’s an entire Internet right at their fingertips, you know, anyway. So
  • some tips here couple of things to to point out and give you an idea of how events
  • come out, you know, will affect
  • if you tell me where you were in your household for the Moon landing. I can tell you
  • how I can tell you. You know what
  • number, child you are in the family. If you were on the couch, you’re the older one. If you were on the floor you were like me, you were the remote control for the family.
  • But the Moon Landing is something where? Where I can say, where are you? Were you? July 2019 69. And people know it
  • for Gen. X. You know, for Gen. X. Millennial, Gen. Z. It’s like, What are you kidding? You know
  • it. They don’t relate because they didn’t see it. Same thing, Vietnam war. Now you move down the line.
  • Follow the Berlin wall. Yeah, important, but not the biggest thing
  • desert storm for me, not as big because I had to deal with the Vietnam war and wondering if I would if it was going to be going long enough for me to get drafted.
  • Didn’t thankfully
  • student debt under millennial much more of a thing than previous 2 generations. So you look at the events, you look at what they’re going through culturally. Again, this is this is all United States focused.
  • If you put your if your clients are overseas. It’s going to be rather different.
  • Or if they come from that culture even, they’re living here. But this isn’t where they grew up right then their cultural influence is different. And let’s look at Gen. Z. For on the on the far right, marijuana legalization compared to
  • baby boomers and Gen. X. Oh, my God! You could get arrested! Look! I used to have a boss that had me go pick up his pot, and by pot I don’t mean like a little. It was bags of pot.
  • and I look if I get pulled over, I am selling you out. I am selling out your dealer. I am not going to jail for you
  • now. It’s legal. They’re they’re putting in a big dispensary right near us. So
  • how things get looked at well, and most of these folks are in Los Angeles, so they’ve been around for a while. In fact, if you’d like to know a friend who grows a whole lot of pot in his backyard I could get you to. Is he sharing? No, he’s not sharing. He is still growing it all for himself
  • financial health and outlook.
  • There’s a whole lot of of student debt. The further to the right you go on the screen.
  • Baby boomers still have most of the disposable income that’s going to be the case for another 10 to 15 years.
  • As boomers retire, and and Gen. X.
  • Huh!
  • I hate that that 3rd one down half don’t have a retirement thing.
  • It’s painful, it is and that’s going to continue. Now, how is that going to affect millennials and Gen. Z. Well, let’s share this moment.
  • Most of the capital in the world right now
  • is on the left side of your screen, and
  • if they haven’t saved a whole lot, they’re going to be selling their house and living on it. That’s the the kind of the plan for a lot.
  • which means there, there will be less
  • moving to the right side for a little while. It’s going to take a while. The the number I’ve heard is, is a couple of decades before millennials, and Gen. Z. Start having it as well as good as
  • baby boomers. Real estate values took with look, and and they went. They went up a lot
  • here in Los Angeles, or where we were in Sedona.
  • you know, and we benefit from that as consumers
  • still reading newspapers. Even if it’s the digital version
  • how people get their news. The further you are to the right, the more news they’re getting from their social media platforms.
  • They, you know, they may see a meme, and they may or not click through.
  • So, especially for those of you that are asking, Well, how do we sell to these? This is a really, this slide is a really good answer to that. We we shared some in previous slides right, we talked about email versus text. And
  • but here’s another one that that tells you gives you a clue to some of those answers. Right? If you’re looking at baby boomers who read newspapers, even if they’re online. Well, maybe you want to place an ad in those newspapers, if that’s what they’re reading, right as an example. Right? You can. You can go through all this. We’re not going to take time to go through every single line. But you get the point right. These give you clues as to well, where would I put those ads, or those messages, or those posts?
  • When you get the replay, go back through and come back to this slide millennials. Don’t
  • a 3rd don’t like advertising. Well, okay, so what do I do? Well, you’re blogging you’re sharing information that that is gonna promote you, but yet give their information.
  • This is why all of your business coaches tell you to blog you have, and you can have. You have social media posts, and you have your Google business profile posts that aren’t ads right. They’re just. It’s just a post sharing, as Hank said information.
  • So when you, as you were marketing to them, you you use historical data. You know historical events. And
  • the message that you create
  • give you an example. Let’s say that you are a financial planner. If your target audience is older, it’s.
  • you know, having a hard time putting away money for retirement. We would love to help you. Okay, well, that is going to relate to half of your audience. Heck, what is it? 5% of people have a financial planner. I think that’s the number. So
  • great job, if you’re looking for one
  • millennials, they’re relying on social media. Okay? So you should invest some time. If millennials are your target audience in building up your social media platforms. Now, it’s not the fastest path to cash
  • getting them off of the social media to your website, you know, offering some
  • a a free thing, free information but having it go to your website. So they get onto your email list so that you can real, you know.
  • offer them things through email. Because that’s where they like to get their message.
  • Now you’re not offering them a newsletter.
  • By the way, right? A free report, something that has information in it for them.
  • But they’re not gonna sign up for some newsletter. Right? All of our emails are already overwhelmed. We’re not going to get some newsletters and give me a bunch of things that great. You did all those things this month that’s awesome, whatever. How does that relate to me? So? Yes, a special report that relates to a specific challenge issue that they have, that you’re solving awesome. A newsletter. No.
  • younger. The younger 2 generations are going to make use their phone to make sales.
  • You know what I don’t. I hate making sales on my phone. I would rather go. I would rather go online on my desktop. I’ll do it if it comes to me on my phone. I will absolutely do it on my phone. If it doesn’t work, then I’ll go to my laptop. Sometimes. It, you know, sites just aren’t. Don’t work as well. But yeah, if I can do it on my phone absolutely, it’s in my hand.
  • I’m looking for. Okay, cool,
  • social media, where are they? Younger they are, the more time they are online.
  • There’s a big shock, though, you know I’m I’m probably skewed. I probably spend more time online because we have to. We have to do social media for a bunch of clients. The younger they are, the more time they are online.
  • your website and how it look, your website is going to make a difference. Let’s let’s chat about this for a second
  • the pictures you use on your website.
  • if depending on which generation you are selling to most, those people should appear in your videos and your photos.
  • you know, if you are selling to baby boomers. Don’t put show your product being used by Gen. Z.
  • Vice versa. Your product is being sold to Gen. Z. Don’t show me using your product
  • because they’re not going to relate to it. And as silly as that sounds, people relate to photos
  • to make sure that that is
  • they’re in the right place. We have on our website.
  • We have a hundred plus different testimonial videos, and
  • they go over an entire rainbow spectrum of our target audience.
  • If we are talking to somebody and depending on their demographics, say, Hey, I could send you, you know, send you some video testimonials. You can check. Guess what I’m sending the ones that are most like them. We have a whole bunch more that aren’t incredible testimonials, you know, production, wise and and whatnot but
  • if it is someone that
  • you know is is matched up, I’ll send them a video. Yeah, demographic. It’s not as awesome, but it matches them demographically. This is why.
  • if you come to a bunch of our webinars, and we especially the video on which you did last week. We talk about video testimonials. You can’t have enough of them. It’s because you you want that rainbow white, black Hispanic, you know, every you know, female male age difference.
  • More is better, and you want people to be able to relate to your product through your posts and your blogs and your testimony.
  • So going back to the question about Well, how do we sell? Look at this slide as well? Right. Look at the social media channels that the different generations are on one of the questions we get from our clients. Do I really have to be on all the channels?
  • No, you don’t, I mean, we do say, claim your name, your company, name right on every channel, but you have to be active on all the channels. No, you don’t be active on those channels where your ideal audience is looking for you. So if, when you’re looking at this chart, right, who is your ideal client customer referral partner, what channels are they active and actively looking for you on? That’s where you should be active.
  • This is where doing this live would be is going to be helpful.
  • Just a comment for us. How are you gonna communicate?
  • Okay, take a look at at that demographic demographically.
  • I think some of this is
  • cross, generational, being genuine, being authentic, I I would never, ever recommend that you put on airs.
  • yes, dear, well, yes, I would agree. Don’t put on airs right. But
  • look back at the the older generations where we hired actors to do a thing to talk about a thing right that played more to those older generations. The younger generations don’t want to see that they want to see the real people that are really set. That’s why those video testimonials are so powerful. We’re not expecting that a small business owner has hired an actor to do a video testimonial. Those days are over.
  • Look and and the I’m gonna talk to the far left and the far right far left says, don’t make them feel. Oh, you know what I I took someone off of our list that made a comment to me like, Hmm, delete that person off of our list they are. They no longer get get any of my time
  • when we see them out and about like. I have no no reason to help you in your business, even on a and you know who I’m talking about? At the other end. Don’t make them feel too young, you know.
  • for us. If you’re millennial or Gen. Z. We want to encourage the
  • those folks that are younger to step up and
  • take control within within their organizations. For example. There’s a a young lady that’s a millennial. She’s in one of our lunch groups. I keep telling her. Look, you’re going to be the mayor of this town. I have no doubt.
  • She is active, she is brilliant. She’s
  • engaging. Yeah, and I’m just like you have a future in politics.
  • even you may not see it yet, but as soon as your your 3 year old turns 18, this is exit. This is where you’re going to go. I’m telling you. Now write it down, put it up.
  • Are we always look for younger generations and encourage them into entrepreneurism. And taking that leap,
  • one of the reasons is God, if we I wish we had started earlier, you know, as far as we, we’ve had our business for 30 years, we could have done it a little earlier.
  • we don’t have a way back machine exactly, but
  • we always say, look, take a look at.
  • take a look where you are. Don’t worry about failing you. You get other shots at it. So
  • fail faster. Yeah, fail faster work harder.
  • and
  • always use humor humor if they get it. I’m going to give you an idea. This is an ad that is in German.
  • it’s not that app. It’s not. No, but you’ll you’ll get it. Humor is awesome.
  • Mayday, Mayday.
  • Can you hear us, can you?
  • We are sinking. We are sinking. Hello!
  • This is the German Coast Guard.
  • We are thinking we’re thinking, what are you thinking about?
  • You thought I know what you said I I could include that one here. I could add it on. It’s fine if you are
  • targeting parents of young children.
  • you, by the way, this is an ad you could reproduce yourself with your cell phone.
  • It’s just a matter of putting a different message.
  • Okay, yeah. That ad could also be if you had a an adult only
  • restaurant and adults, you know. Only getaway place.
  • Yeah, you could use the exact sort of thing if if your if your business targets adults
  • or if you’re let’s say you’re a counselor, and you. And you want to talk to parents.
  • you do the different call to action. Oh, yeah, the the call to action. You know, we call to action. We want to talk about it, you know. What would you? How would you, Dr. Phil? Dr. Phillips is here for you? Yeah. So you can
  • read, shoot that one. Absolutely use your own kids, grandkids whatever.
  • That’s your mindset.
  • One more fun ad.
  • I just think this is the funniest commercial. I just love it.
  • No, you think the whole?
  • Oh, boy.
  • jumme hockey on Mobile!
  • Now let’s talk about this before we we get into the the humor of it.
  • The guy in the video in his forties.
  • So the target audience forties male.
  • If your target audience was younger and or older, you put a different model into your ad, and that’s how you get the same humor.
  • But targeting a different audience.
  • Big guy won’t work.
  • Good question.
  • Yeah.
  • Catching your.
  • By the way. I’ve seen that same ad with a different insurance company logo. So this is
  • kind of interesting that that we’ve seen it with different corporations.
  • So having humor helps all right, real quick.
  • Here comes a quiz which demographic does this speak to?
  • 3, 2 baby boomers rock and roll music less optimistic? Yeah.
  • which demographic. Does this speak to?
  • The 1st kids have act. Children have access to arcade games and computers.
  • Are you reluctant to grow up still? No
  • sharing a coke with a friend.
  • Millennial strong. Yeah. Because personalized with their name on it. Got it? Yeah. Cook nailed it with that one. Their their sales to millennials just skyrocketed during the time they did that.
  • And one more Gen. Z.
  • They wanna have more than just a job, more than just an education which is cool, so
  • there’s your quick quiz.
  • Alright going back to remember our inspiration for this our target audience. I just want to give you a a few quick slides, because this was the the
  • the
  • inspiration for this a while ago. These stats are from 2,016 Pew Research Center, one of the best research places anywhere.
  • they haven’t redone this, but you can see
  • how things some things stay the same. Some things are will change. Depending on
  • race. Different things will
  • the most important, you know, events will be most important to it. So keep the race of somebody you’re talking to
  • in mind their education level
  • the more you know, different college graduate. All of these slides are at the Pew Research Center.
  • In fact, I I looked the other day. They haven’t redone this
  • but if you go to Pre Pew Research Center and just look up, you know the
  • do generational comparisons. These slides pop up. So you get an idea
  • where somebody lives can also make a difference.
  • So it’s part of the Us. Yeah, part of the Us. Yeah. And men and women can be and have a huge difference in how they do see things.
  • All right.
  • Unicorn is there as always at the end of our events, because there’s no such thing as a finished marketing plan. You will always have to continue to market what you’re doing and
  • what are the next steps you can take? Kind of simple.

  • best thing you got from today was, it’ll help us in our research if you learn something new.

  • You probably have several different paths.
  • and the more you know that the easier it is to change your story to relate to the generations that you want to sell to. Well, but you may also have different funnels depending on the generation as well. Yeah, right. Those older ones may not find you online. First, st they may get to online, but they may not find you there first, st whereas the younger ones will
  • brilliant.

  • You know
  • it will vary by the generation, and it depends how good the virtual reality I could, I could imagine putting someone into a situation that they may have grown up in. They they could be put back at, you know. Here’s what happened. Let’s look. Let’s think it was something positive.
  • Oh, if you were gonna talk to to someone of my age generation.
  • That liked baseball. Let’s just say, here you are at at Wrigley Field
  • the 1st day that night that they used night, you know, lights at Wrigley Field, and if that you know, just as an example of how it could tie into so if they were selling light. Yeah, if it was a light person, or how things, how things, if they sell something that shows change. Things used to always be day. Now it’s night. We change things in your life by doing. You know
  • I do think it it matters the generation we’ve we’ve been watching the virtual reality, space
  • change and the way that they’re trying to do. For example, there are
  • webinars, because I don’t know what else to call them right in a virtual reality space. So instead of you watching a webinar like this on Zoom, you’re actually
  • virtually sitting in a room with this on screen. And there’s these little people that are. And we’ve had people trying to sell that to us to do this for you. It doesn’t make sense to us. No, I don’t get it. I don’t want to sit looking at little people. There’s no need, and you can walk from. You can walk from one room to another where another event is happening where you go from one trade show
  • I.
  • So there are some. There are some right, maybe maybe the millennials of the Gen. Z. That speaks to, and maybe we’ll speak to them even better when the technology gets better.
  • It it doesn’t speak to to us. And I actually don’t know anyone that’s in our age demographic. I wish wish Richard was still here. That would say, you know that that
  • that speaks for that.
  • Let’s let’s back up one little step there.
  • pre covid, when we when none of us really were using zoom
  • I think it had a better shot. But right now, it’s like, Okay, we get on zoom, the the screen is right. The flat screen is right there. We get to see somebody’s face. We get to have a chat with them. I don’t have to feel like I’m in the same room.
  • so I think that Zoom is, in my opinion zoom is just fine
  • without needing that virtual reality. Little people. Yeah, if you’re selling a product that needs 3D visual.
  • let me play you a video that’ll show it better. And and yours, let’s say, you know, showing you this product and it, you know, from all 3 sides it it’s still not there, because you can’t. You can’t smell it. Hear it, taste it. Yeah, hold it
