SCORE LA webinar: Social Media for (people who think they are) Dummies
Here’s the link to the replay:
UNEDITED TRANSCRIPT
-
Hello everyone, this is Dawn Turner with SBA Score Los Angeles. I am here with the ULOPs on another great presentation. Unfortunately, we’re having trouble with Zoom at this point, so what we’re going to do is go through the session
-
on our own, and then get a recorded copy out to everyone that registered. Sorry for the delay, but sometimes technology happens.
-
yoga.
-
And, in any event, we will get a recorded copy out to you, so, you know, you will have the information that really is very valuable.
-
If you want to hang until we can get this going, you’re welcome to hang, I just don’t know how long you’re gonna be hanging while we try and get Zoom to respond.
-
Yeah, we’re gonna play with it for a while and see how far we go, so you can hang. If not, just be reassured that we will get a recorded session out to you. So, just bear with us. I don’t know,
-
Whether, this is some kind of, wild event, but,
-
I’ve got a notice here from Evelyn that says, I’ve got you on.
-
Yep.
-
range, so that’s interesting.
-
You do have us on screen, but you have the second device, not our main device that has the slides. So we have not yet been able to boot up the device that has the slides. I keep getting a, please wait… anyway, it’s friggin’ annoying.
-
Well, yeah, I know. You know, it’s all tech, you know, it’s just the way the world works. So we’ll try to hang together here and work through this, so if you have other things to do today, feel free to depart.
-
And you will get a recording.
-
Theoretic.
-
No, don’t get a recording. I just want to win. All right, thanks, Evelyn. Thanks, Evelyn, so much. Thanks for your patience.
-
You’re welcome, all.
-
Okay, thanks, Bo.
-
And Karen.
-
MJ and Margarita, you… I guess you missed the beginning. We’re having some technical difficulties, so we’re trying to continue… we’re still working at it. You are welcome to hang with us, or you can step away and know that once we… once it does upload and we get it all done, we will send you out a recording.
-
Clean recording without this waiting time.
-
You’ll receive the recording whether you hang or not, honestly.
-
Because SCORE will send you out the recording anyway, to everyone that registered.
-
Even after a reboot, Don, I’m having the same issue.
-
Oh, we got progress on Zoom.
-
Oh. Good!
-
Look at that, finally, good golly.
-
Alright, I’m muting this device, because that’ll just be annoying.
-
Yeah.
-
Hey, Don, since we’re getting started, like, 10 minutes late, are you gonna be able to hang for an extra 10 minutes?
-
Yeah, I’m fine. I’m fine on my end.
-
Oh, there’s… their elk, it came up. Oh, good.
-
Yeah, I’m working on it. Hold on.
-
Alright.
-
You ready? Let me…
-
Hey, Don?
-
Yes.
-
Here we go!
-
Okay, good.
-
Well, good morning, everyone! I’m here with Hank and Sharon.
-
Yulov on another great presentation.
-
I want to talk a little bit about SCORE. We are an organization of volunteers, about 10,000 of us, over 200 chapters nationwide. Our mission is to provide professional guidance and information to maximize the success of America’s existing
-
and emerging small businesses. We create success stories. We have one-on-one counseling, business workshops, website resources at score.org, and free or low-cost presentations throughout the year.
-
Our workouts include starting your own business, creating a successful business plan, financing your business, marketing, franchising, creating an online presence, promoting and protecting your invention, and many more.
-
Keep checking our website for great presentations.
-
Thank you all for coming. Do request a mentor at score.org if you don’t have one. Like us on Facebook. Tell other entrepreneurs about SCORE and all that we offer. Yes, you will be sent the video.
-
The technology will work. I apologize for the slight delay today, but inevitably, the technology works, and you will get a copy of today’s recording.
-
So, for those that were live, and then left, this is what you missed, and yeah.
-
So anyway, thank you all for… thank you all those that have hung in there for these tense few moments of delay, but it is all worth it, because this is a super presentation. So with that, I hand it over to Hank and Sharon.
-
Thank you, sir. I don’t know about you two, I wasn’t tense, because I wasn’t dealing with the reboot. Sharon was… Sharon was dealing with the tech. I’m just… I’m just over there warming up in the bullpen, you know?
-
Well, yes, sometimes we do have the technician, and then we have the celebrity. So, with that, we do have… we do… we do come out with a combination that is very, very productive and worthwhile to everyone that’s viewing it.
-
Well, awesome. All right, let’s… let’s get started. We had to add a subtitle to this, because we told a couple of our clients we were doing a webinar called, you know, Social Media Marketing for Dummies. They said, well, wait a minute, not everybody’s a dummy, so it’s really…
-
It’s only for those of you that think you’re dummies. You’re not really. No. Y’all aren’t dumb.
-
Hey, first, first thing we want to chat about, if you’re doing presentations, you should have your own All Rights Reserved slide. This is our All Rights Reserved slide. If you don’t want to pay a lawyer to do the whole thing, you’re going to get our email address. Just ask for our All Rights Reserved slide. We’ll send you a Word document.
-
You take out our information, you put your information in, and then when, you know, show it to your lawyer, and then when you do presentations, people will know that it is your intellectual property, and nobody should be taking and using any of it.
-
So… Does… does social media…
-
Does it cause you a little bit of stress, or anxiety, or… Oh my god! That’s usually what we get.
-
Well, today we’re going to talk about a bunch of social media mistakes, not 9, not 10, but a full 11, because we turned it up to 11.
-
We’re gonna talk about what you can do instead of those mistakes, some next steps, and we’re gonna give you a bunch of free stuff.
-
Here’s what today isn’t about. We’re not here to sell you social media management. That is not what Sharon and I do, so you’re not… Or want to do. Yeah, we’re teaching you today how to do it yourself. So, get out your notebook, if you have questions, hold onto them, ask them at the end, and
-
if you’re watching a replay, you’re going to have our email address, you can send us your questions, and we will answer them to you. Or schedule time. Yeah, whenever you’re watching a replay, you can ask us questions, feel free to do that as well.
-
A little about us, we… our business is 30 years old. We’re focused on sales and marketing and HR and your back office systems. We’ve written 8 best-selling books.
-
on business, including one on social media. Speak to groups.
-
20 to 2,000. We have several hundred episodes of our own
-
podcast called The Marketing Checklist. We’ve created a couple of different marketing plans. I’ve been quoted in 500 articles and being on other podcasts.
-
So much easier to be on other people’s podcasts than to create our own.
-
much easier. Sharon has a master’s in Nonprofit Management. Between the two of us, we’ve served on a dozen boards for nonprofits. We created the Small Business Breakthrough Boot Camps. In fact, we’re gonna do our…
-
first one of… in, like, 7 months, in May, and we’re gonna be doing it locally in Maryland.
-
We’ve trained hundreds of small business owners and done thousands of consultations, so that’s a little about us.
-
I want to give you some free things to get you started. First, I mentioned our books. Our email address is on the screen. Sharon’s gonna put it in the chat, but if you’re watching the replay, you don’t have the chat, so… They do have the chat. Oh, they do? Okay, cool. So the chat would be live.
-
At the end of today’s webinar, you just send us one email with the three things that you want. There’s a few different things as we go through that we’re gonna say, hey, if you want this.
-
add it to your email. I’m delaying a little bit on the slide so you can choose which book you want. Yeah, but if you’re already overwhelmed and you can’t decide, then 4 is… Yeah, just take the marketing checklist 4. That’s… if you can’t figure it out, that’s what you want, because that’s your guide for overwhelmed and overthinking entrepreneurs.
-
Don’t overthink it, just ask for TMC4.
-
We do a podcast, since we’re talking about social media. One of the best things you can post on social media is video and a video of you on a podcast. Oh, that’s awesome!
-
And it’s not something you can post just once or twice. You can post it every month if you want. It lives on our YouTube channel, so you get the link. You send us the questions, or we send you the questions. You say… yeah, here are the questions. We answer them. Wow.
-
I speak for a living.
-
You send us your answers, then we are able to make you look incredible. It’s a really long podcast, it’s 7 minutes, 21 seconds, because our wedding anniversary? It’s July 21st. It just makes sense.
-
And if you want to know how to put everything you learn in the next hour into action more easily and effectively, stay tuned till the end of the webinar, because we have something else to give you for free.
-
So, for those of you that aren’t really sure about social media, this one slide explains it all, for every, you know, a whole bunch of different
-
platforms. My favorite is the Yelp. I freaking hate this cat food. That’s my favorite one on the entire one, even though Yelp isn’t a social media platform.
-
It’s my favorite one.
-
If for those that like dogs and think I was, you know.
-
being… showing favoritism, here’s the… here’s the… Dog version. Dog version. Again, Yelp, best fire hydrant in town, highly recommended.
-
So, sometimes, when it comes to social media.
-
it isn’t necessarily the idea you have, it’s how you implement it. For example, I was at a ribbon cutting for a store out in Westlake, off of Thousand Oaks Boulevard, that really big, huge mall, like, there are some stores.
-
And I happened to notice that they had a…
-
box. They wanted your… your input. Hey, what do you think? Do you have comments?
-
The challenge was that that box was behind the planter.
-
So, a really good idea, and it was wonderful that they offer… asked for it, but sometimes implementing the idea is really important. So, keep in mind for all of these.
-
Sometimes it’s just how you’re doing it.
-
Alright, we’re gonna get into them. On every slide, you’re gonna see the What Dummies Do, and then on the slide after that, we’ll tell you
-
The, you know, the answer for it.
-
So, a lot of folks don’t define who their audience is. So, they’re just randomly throwing stuff against the wall. Now, but not you!
-
You’ve listened to us now, so you understand that you want to target your most profitable audiences. Now, I put…
-
put profitable in there, because if you’re only going to talk to one of your audiences, let’s make it the most profitable. Sharon and I had 6.
-
With a seventh one that we think exists, but we’re not quite sure. But not all six or seven are the most profitable. Exactly. Yeah, we know the ones that, you know, the two that are. So…
-
Remember, it’s… this is kind of hard, because you want to avoid the feeling of scarcity. Most people want to think, well, I want to reach out to everybody, but…
-
But not with each post.
-
Yeah, when you reach out to everybody, you really don’t reach out to anybody, so you’ve got to narrow it down. So, imagine that these four women, they all want to buy a car. They’re probably not looking for the same kind of car, they’re probably not looking for the same benefits or features of that car, so a good car salesperson
-
Is going to message each of them differently.
-
Probably on different platforms, in order to attract them to their dealership.
-
The same thing is true for you. It is quite possible that these four women could all benefit from your product or service. It’s possible that at least one of these four women is your most profitable client, customer, or referral partner, but you’ll need to message each of them differently, again, probably on different platforms.
-
in order to attract them to you. If you’re trying to create one post.
-
On every platform that you think is going to speak to all four of them at the same time, none of them are going to actually feel like they’re talking directly to them, and they will go elsewhere.
-
So, one of the ways that we…
-
look at the demographics. This is a chart we give to our clients, and there are an awful lot of demographics from age, and where somebody lives, and their ethnicity, and their income.
-
your demographics may vary from others, and sometimes it only takes 2 or 3 demographics to focus in on an audience. What will make that audience
-
be yours. If you’d like this chart, add it, just say you want the demographics chart, we’ll send it to you, along with the other free things that you’re getting. At the end of the webinar. Yep. The other half of that equation are the psychographics.
-
It isn’t only demographics, it’s what are their hopes, dreams, desires, goals, what makes them tick?
-
And that’s what tends to separate
-
You know, two women that are aged 45, that are both, teachers.
-
they could be very different psychographically, you know, what makes them tick. So, the demographics are one part, and this is the other part of the
-
equation. And since we’re talking about social media, this is especially powerful on social media, because if you are running ads on social media, one of the questions they ask when they’re helping you target your audience is, who else are they following?
-
Because, for those of you that have seen some of our other webinars, right, if you’re following King Charles, you’re going to get a different kind of audience than if you’re following Ozzy Osbourne, even though their demographics are the same, the psychographics are really different. So it helps to know who else are they listening to, who else are they following?
-
Yep. And you’ll see the picture that’s on the slide. You’ve already seen it a bunch of times, we use it a lot. It’s our trade show booth.
-
And we found out, as soon as we started using it out in the wild, that it attracts our audiences.
-
We had, before we built it, we sent out a mock-up of it to all of our clients and said, what do you think of this? Would it get you to go to the booth? And we got 100%, yeah, you know, thumbs up.
-
We didn’t know that it… if it was just cute, or it would actually work. But it turns out, if somebody gets us.
-
they get this. And, you know, it’s obviously Lucy from Peanuts, her psychiatric health booth, 5 cents.
-
And it just works. Now, we don’t have to be on a trade show.
-
We can use it
-
In a webinar. We can put a pic… put a picture of it up on social media and say, gosh, can’t wait till we get to do another trade show. And it attracts our audience. So, by posting to your audience.
-
That’s how they end up reaching out and
-
Following you, liking you, interacting with you.
-
Alright, so, a lot of dummies. They only post about themselves.
-
Instead of making it about their audiences. Hey, we launched a product.
-
In fact, McDonald’s just launched a product, and their social media is all about that.
-
sandwich.
-
Hey, we just hit X amount of customers. We just had a million followers. We’re, you know, we’re excited… no.
-
But not you.
-
So you’re talking about your audience’s pain points.
-
and how they solve them. You want to save solution… goodness! Share solutions. Easy for you to say. No, it evidently isn’t.
-
Hmm…
-
And you want to make your company a hero to them. A couple of examples. Here are a couple of humorous ways, you know, one is saying, how mad is she? Need a new way to follow… to tell your story.
-
Couple of fun ways, talking about humor, working in marketing is always fun. Showing your expertise. Here we have two different marketing tips that we post from time to time.
-
Now, this is not how to say happy birthday.
-
Couple of folks make the happy birthday all about them.
-
You don’t want to do that. Just say frickin’ happy birthday. Now, sometimes you do have to promote.
-
when we have a new book coming out, in May, we’re going to be doing a, boot camp, so we will say, hey.
-
We have a boot camp, would you like a ticket?
-
When we have a book coming out, hey, for 99 cents, you’re gonna get this. And then we also, on the website for the book, we always say, by the way, when you buy the book, you get this, this, this, and we give them a whole list of things that make it worthwhile. So, you do have to promote.
-
But you want to make it much more about them than it is about you.
-
Inconsistent postings. The question always comes up.
-
How often do I have to post, Sharon? Every day. Oh, do I really have to? No, no, you don’t have to. Look, it’s your business. You don’t have to. But if you really want to
-
Gain… gain clients, customers, referral partners.
-
and keep them engaged with you so that they keep coming back, then, yes, you do have to, every day, on those platforms where they’re actively looking for you. Yep.
-
Because the algorithms, they reward you if you are giving them content.
-
Every platform sells ads.
-
And your content and my content are the… The things people read…
-
So that when they, you know, in between the ads, just like a newspaper, there are articles that you read the newspaper for, and then there are ads in between it. It’s the same thing. And the more you tell the algorithms that I’m gonna be here all the time.
-
the more they rely on you and they show your stuff to more people. It’s a very simple
-
deal that you’re making with them.
-
So, some dummies… They choose the platform that’s just convenient to use.
-
For that. For them.
-
I’m very fortunate in that our audiences, they do tend to love Facebook.
-
Because that is the one that’s convenient for me, and I, you know, like it the most. But we also post
-
on Alignable, and Instagram, and… We do. So, that’s where we tend to know our clients are. Our clients aren’t looking for us
-
on, what, Pinterest? Pinterest. Now, they’re on Pinterest, right? Don’t get me wrong. Our clients are on Pinterest, but they’re not looking for business coaching on Pinterest.
-
They’re looking for recipes and remodeling ideas. They’re not looking for business coaching. So, we do a presence, but we’re not active there. That’s not one of the places we go every day. Facebook, LinkedIn, Alignable, absolutely.
-
We call our audiences, we name each one of them. We recommend that you do the same. And the first one was named Harriet.
-
So we just generically call them the Harriott’s. And we know where our Harriots hang out, so we tend to use the different platforms that they do.
-
Now, for us, as an example, we just mentioned, yeah, Facebook, we’re there quite a bit. We’re on YouTube, we’re on Instagram.
-
LinkedIn a lot. Not Twitter at all. No one… Well, we don’t have a presence there anymore. Because no one looked for business coaches there. So, figure out which platform your folks are hanging out on, and that’s where you’re going to want to go.
-
So you post, then you start getting comments.
-
Or messages, and… but you’re… you’re already past it.
-
You know, you… You’ve moved on. You have. You very much want to make it a conversation.
-
When people are giving you comments, you want to answer them. Here are a couple of, just a couple of examples from the… in fact, these are in the last week on my own Facebook, personal profile.
-
Every night I post a question. It’s called the OK Late Night Facebooker’s Question. It’s been going up every night for over 10 years.
-
So, each person that answered the other day, for example, if, you know, Louise said, Julia, oh, I remember that, it doesn’t have to be deep.
-
You know, June Cleaver… one person said June Cleaver, and I added a joke about, you know, a Leave It to Beaver joke. You could even just say thank you, as long as you’re doing something, right? It’s just… you’re playing with that algorithm. The algorithm rewards you the more there’s engagement. Yeah. So if you post.
-
Or in this case, when Hank posts, and you comment on Hank’s post, that’s one comment, but then when he responds to you, again, maybe he only said thank you, or one of these other answers that he gave, now you’ve got two
-
Right? So, and it just keeps growing. So it… the algorithm hasn’t yet… someday, maybe it will. Today is not that day. They have not caught on, but he’s commenting on his own post. It still counts. They just count the number of comments.
-
Doesn’t matter.
-
If you want to raise your social media engagement. Here are 50 ways. You don’t have to write them all down. If you want them, just add to your email list. Hey, I want to know the 50 ways to increase my social media engagement. We’ll just send you that list, all right?
-
Boom.
-
If somebody says something negative, they ignore it or delete it.
-
Not you. Not you.
-
You acknowledge any negative feedback.
-
I hear what you’re saying.
-
here’s what happened, and you know what? Let’s have a conversation offline. Let me give you an example.
-
You want to take it offline.
-
Amex does that very well. In fact, I love, you know, Hilton Hotels did this.
-
With one, but Hilton has a Hilton Suggests
-
Their Twitter feed scans the Twitter for people that are looking for suggestions, and they will say, hey, have you tried this? And it rarely has to do with, oh, you need a restaurant? Go to the one in our hotel.
-
So, you want to use… you want to put the social in social media, and you want to be human about it.
-
A lot of people don’t add the social media icons to their website.
-
Nope.
-
Here’s the thing.
-
Or when they do, they’re all the way at the top. Yeah.
-
Let’s put them at the bottom.
-
Because… Your website is the real estate on the internet that you own.
-
Your social media pages, that’s rental property.
-
And, and yeah, you’re having the conversation there.
-
And you’re getting people to know who you are on a pretty immediate basis, because your social media pages change more than your
-
websites, generally.
-
But the website is where you get to make the sale. The website is where the work very much gets done, if somebody knows who you are and what you do. Well, and like Hank said, it’s the real estate you own, right? You don’t own the social media platforms.
-
If you don’t know anyone that’s had their social media profile blocked or disappeared or whatever, then you’re a rarity, because almost everyone, it’s either happened to them, or they know someone that it’s happened to.
-
And they don’t need to give you a reason. They… there is a theoretical appeals process on every platform, but good luck.
-
yeah, it gets pretty rough. We’ve been through some of those. It’s really not fun. By the way, once you have the links
-
on your website, make sure they click through. Test them every now and then. We do… we do a lot of, website…
-
reviews. Thank you for that word. We’ll evaluate them and review them, and one of the things we always do is we’ll click a bunch of the links that are on there to make sure they go where they’re supposed to go. I’m astonished how often
-
they just don’t go anywhere. Oh, yeah, I stopped using that platform, or… I didn’t think that platform disappeared, or whatever. Yeah, it happened. And, I mean, social media, it’s easy to click those icons, and you can just check it. But you should check your links on your site.
-
Periodically anyway, at least once a quarter. If you can do it once a month, all the better. And I know that it’s a pain and annoying to do that. There are tools, especially if you have a WordPress website, there are tools that will check them for you and then alert you, hey, that link’s not working.
-
You use your personal profile.
-
as your business page. No, no, no! So, you want to claim your business name on every platform that you’re on.
-
for… if you go to any social media platform, give you an idea, you’ll see we have Uloft Creative on all of them.
-
we’re fortunate that our name is unusual.
-
We do keep them consistent.
-
And when we post… you want to explain the 80-20 rule for posting? Yeah.
-
So, the reason that you want to keep them separate
-
There’s a number of reasons. So, one reason is that the platforms want you to keep them separate, and if you’re doing business on your personal profile.
-
then they can. It’s part of that agreement that you never read at the very beginning. Really? Huh. They can’t shut your profile down, because now you’re doing business on your personal profile, so don’t do that.
-
The other reason is that on your business pages, you get analytics.
-
you get statistics that tell you about the people that are coming to your business page. You don’t get that kind of feedback on your personal profile. Now, Facebook does have one kind of a profile that does try to do a blend.
-
And so if you opt in, if you’re given the opportunity, you can’t just do it. They have to, like.
-
invite you. So if you get the opportunity and you take it, then that is the exception. But generally speaking, personal profile does not give you any analytics
-
to judge who’s coming to your page, what time, what kinds of posts are they engaging with. So the 80-20 rule is on your personal profile, 80% of what you post, so 8 out of 10 posts.
-
are personal. Not drama, not politics, not religion, nothing that’s gonna lower your funnel, but just something that gives folks a flavor of who you are.
-
And then 2 out of 10 are business-related, so that people can then follow the breadcrumbs to your business page.
-
On your business page, it’s flipped.
-
80% of the time, you’re doing business, right? So, 8 out of 10 posts are business. I wrote this blog, I got this testimonial, I… I…
-
I just was reminded of this business tip that you should know, right? Something business-related, and 2 out of 10 are personal. Again, not… not drama, not politics, not religion, none of those things, but…
-
It could be something like, you know, I took a break at lunch, and I tried a new local restaurant, or I took this picture of this beautiful flower, or I tried a new recipe. Something that gives a flavor for who you are.
-
So the people that are coming to your business page get to know, well, why do I want to buy from you instead of Jane Doe next door that sells the same product or service?
-
Now.
-
The… the trick for them to follow those breadcrumbs from your personal profile to your business page is those 2 out of 10 on your personal profile, you can share from your business page to your personal profile.
-
If you do… when you do that, if I were to see it and I comment on that post, that business post that you shared from your business page, because it came from your business page, it does count in your analytics.
-
The same is not true the other way around, though. If you’re posting on your personal profile, and you think, oh, that would be a good 2 out of 10 to post on my business page, do it separately. Because if you share it from your personal profile to your business page, and I comment on it on your business page, but it’s really a personal profile post, it doesn’t count.
-
on the business analytics, because it was really a personal post. So don’t… don’t share from personal to business.
-
Post separately, only share from business to personal, and only 2 out of 10 posts.
-
Just like the business part of… this is a business webinar, and I’ll let you know that the… in the lower right-hand corner over here, if you look at us, the white thing is the back end of one of our cats.
-
It’s really a black and white thing, but the black kind of blends in. Yeah.
-
So, yeah, our… David, our cat is down there.
-
Over-automating.
-
Yeah… well, I used to… I used to use a tool.
-
That posted several times a day on… our pages.
-
and…
-
Algorithms, the different platforms used to not mind, and then all of a sudden, they decided, you know.
-
We kind of mind. We don’t want you posting, you know, we want it to be there live. Yeah, we would prefer that you are actually on the site and posting automatically.
-
Now, on… Most of them, you can set up a post
-
For later. Like, Facebook, you can… On Facebook. I don’t think you can do anything else. Yeah, you know what, I’m trying… I was trying to think if Instagram… no, I can’t do it on Instagram. Even though they’re both owned by one app. Yeah. No, but you can on Facebook. You know, you’d think. I know.
-
You can’t do it on LinkedIn, either. But on Facebook, like, we’re… when… if we’re gonna go away for a night, I can set up posts to go
-
Automatically.
-
And I don’t have to worry about, you know, while we’re on the road, I don’t have to worry about posting. Because on a couple of our platforms, we post
-
You know, a couple of times a day. So…
-
you want to do this on a you’re-doing-it basis. We do a webinar on hiring a, you know, social media manager, if you’re going to do that or not. If you want to watch that, reach out to us, we’ll send you a link to it. We’ve done it for SCORE a bunch of times.
-
And one of the challenges when you hire a social media manager is that they have a whole bunch of clients.
-
They set it and forget it.
-
you know, wow, I’m a social media manager, yeah, I get up and I set up for each client, I set up all of their posts using this tool, and then I get to play the rest of the day.
-
Well, that doesn’t help you, because the algorithms don’t like that. They want you paying attention. Here’s one of the reasons why, is they want your eyeballs on the platform, because that’s how you see ads.
-
If you don’t see… if you’re just using a tool, you won’t see the ad. You’re never there. So, what good are you to the… what good are you, says Facebook, if you’re not there to look at the ads? That’s how we get paid. It’s all about the ads, it’s about the money. Does that make sense? Good.
-
And… and really close to that.
-
Is content that… that isn’t you.
-
You know, you’re using AI to create it, or…
-
People don’t get… don’t learn your voice.
-
If you’re… if you’re watching this today, it’s because you’re… you’re using social media for your business.
-
That’s the point of it.
-
At some point, they’re gonna meet you.
-
And it very much helps if you are the same authentic person that they meet.
-
In person.
-
It makes it easier to have an instant relationship with you, or a positive experience with you.
-
If your voice is the same. When you read our books, Yeah, we… we don’t…
-
have anyone write our books for us. We write every chapter. What’s interesting is, after a while, you can tell, if I wrote the chapter of Sharon did, you start hearing the voices different. Sorry. Sorry about that. But the idea is for all of this content, for people to get to know who you are.
-
So you want to create your own content.
-
Or, you will… if somebody’s gonna create it for you, they need to get to know you well enough that they know your voice.
-
And you need to own that content. So if they woke up with amnesia the next day, you still have the content, and they’re not using it for another client in the same industry as you.
-
Because that confuses… wait, I’m seeing the same thing on multiple brands, whose really is this? Yep. You know, I’ll put a picture of Mookie or one of our other cats, and I’ll type something like this. Yeah.
-
This is our cat. We have several. In fact, right now, I hear Southpaw over sitting…
-
Shush! Dude, we’re almost done! I’ll be back over there. I don’t think they can hear you. Yeah. No, they probably can’t hear you.
-
Zoom’s gotten really good at filtering out anything that’s not human voice.
-
Just.
-
Along that line, some people use an awful lot of hashtags.
-
Twitter doesn’t mind it, but… It gets annoying. 1 to 3. Yeah. That’s it.
-
And there are some platforms that it means absolutely nothing. Unalignable, it means absolutely nothing.
-
The hashtags is to sort, right? So, if you wanted to see everything
-
in this case, CIL Premium Beauty, and you wanted to see everything that CIL Paints posted on… with that particular folder, then you would click on that, you’d see everything.
-
But why you would click on logo, you’d see everything that ever… anyone ever posted having to do with a logo, or with art, I mean, that’s a lot of… oof, seriously? So, no. And several years ago, I started using two hashtags for my OK Late Night Facebookers question. So, if you wanted to see
-
a whole bunch of okay latenight night picks, Booker’s Question, you just click on the hashtag one time, and you get this long, long, long, long, long, long list.
-
And then you don’t have to see everything else that he posts, you’ll just see that. Hi. Hi, Southpaw, that’s Southpaw on camera now.
-
You’re in the way. Yes, you’re in the way, little guy.
-
Little.
-
Don’t knock over my water, please. Thank you. He’s not little. He’s not little.
-
The dummies ignore video.
-
Yeah, don’t do that.
-
we’ve done…
-
webinars that are all about video. Again, in fact, again, if you want to see one of our webinars where we talk about video and how to do it, reach out to us, we’ll send you a link. Just put it in that email that you’re sending.
-
All of the platforms like video more. So, sharing video is a great thing. We share video all the time.
-
You’re being annoying. Sometimes it’ll be a cat video, but, you know, what the heck?
-
it helps you explain. There are all sorts of different videos.
-
Yeah, we’ve… we have done videos, before we do a bootcamp. We’ll shoot a video when we’re setting up. Hey, we’re getting ready to start our bootcamp in a little while. Or, hey, we’re getting ready to do a webinar soon. Tune in. We do share business tips, we do anything
-
Well, in fact, my favorite. We used to live in Sedona, and we would still drive to Los Angeles every month, because we had speaking gigs in person.
-
You know, pre-COVID. Remember those days?
-
And we started doing a video, a specific video, as we were crossing the California-Arizona border.
-
And it was…
-
the same sort of a, hey, tank chair, we’re crossing the border. Oh, look, we just passed into California, and immediately there’s brake lights, you know.
-
Well, yeah, there’s a… Check, you know, there’s a checkpoint there.
-
So yeah, of course there are brake lights, but it’s a great joke.
-
We would tell people where, you know, why we were going, who, where we were going to be speaking, and how they could get a free ticket.
-
So, we, we did that.
-
Every month we went into LA, people started getting used to seeing, oh, you know, I recognize that’s Sharon and Hank in the car. They’d click it and find out we were going to speak, and it increased our attendance. So get… using video that way, is
-
one of the best things. Here’s a little bonus that we just posted back up a little bit ago. You can hide an… we have an Easter egg hidden on our website, if you go find it.
-
Let us know where you found it. What’s the prize?
-
Oh, you can read… Three of our books? Yeah, you can read three of our books. So, if you go to our website and find it.
-
I’ll give you a hint, it’s only one click away from the main page.
-
Very simple.
-
So, you just learned a bunch of ways to properly and very effectively, more effectively use your social media platforms.
-
Now, that unicorn is there.
-
Because unicorns don’t exist, and neither is a completed marketing or social media plan. It’s something you’re always going to have to be updating. So, the next steps are kind of simple.
-
You should create a marketing budget. Now, in this case, everything we talked about today,
-
there’s no financial investment. You can do everything we talked about today yourself, So, the investment… is time.
-
So whatever you pay yourself, pay yourself to do it. So… but so budget your time. When are you going to create videos? When are you actually going to post?
-
And you can figure out when to post by looking at the insights on each of the business profile pages.
-
You’ve got to get proficient with
-
shooting video. You have to know your… what your sales funnels are. That’s the… how somebody goes from knowing who you are.
-
To evaluating what you do, to deciding if they want to hire you, to hiring you.
-
Placing the order. You entered one of our sales funnels today. You’re watching Sharon and I do a video. This is one of several that we’ve got.
-
We give free information away.
-
Some people decide, you know, I’d really like to talk to them and maybe coach with them. So that’s one of our sales funnels. Congratulations, you’re in it.
-
And you’ve… you’ve got to get to know the social platforms that you are using.
-
What are the… what are the hinky things that go on? What are the best times to post? Best ways to post?
-
So, know the platforms that you’re on.
-
For your marketing in general, you should have a list of 12 things that you want to do.
-
If you want a list of a whole bunch of ways you can market your business, again, add that to your email, we’ll send you a list.
-
We say 12, not a top 10, because there’s 12 months in a year, and if you add
-
The next year, if you added one thing to your marketing basket every month.
-
In the course of a year, you’re gonna see your sales go up.
-
At the top of that list, you should put the three things you want to do first, and then of those 3, what’s the most important? So what’s the one thing you’re gonna do, like, right now?
-
Feed the Cat. Feed the cat after we’re done? Okay. When Sharon and I decide we’re gonna publish a new book, it goes to number one.
-
Two of our books are still on our top 12. Well, but wait, you already published them. Yeah, but we leveraged two of those books, Partners and Everything, to get on podcasts.
-
That deal with relationships. And, the marketing checklist for overwhelmed and overthinking entrepreneurs to get on podcasts where they talk about business, and specifically about
-
Something along the lines of, oh my god, I can’t handle it! You know, stress.
-
So, they sit at, like, number 11 and number 9.
-
on our… on our top 12 list. So, if we have some time and say, oh, I have… I have a gap in my schedule, look at our marketing list.
-
Oh, I haven’t reached out to a podcaster in a little while, I’ll do that. We send them questions, here are some questions you could ask us, here are our answers. Here’s our schedule line.
-
And what we’re doing is we’re handing them a show, and most podcasters will like it if you hand them a show.
-
And if any of these things are challenging, for goodness sakes, get some help.
-
So, we… earlier on, we were talking about the number 3 thing, if you want to know how to put any of the things you learned today into immediate action. Very simple, you can get a free coaching call with us. It’s 30 minutes long. It’s not a sales pitch. Here’s our sales pitch. If you want to know about coaching, I’ll send you a link. There, that’s like 5 seconds, so the other 29 minutes.
-
50-some-odd seconds are over you.
-
When you go to howtoggettherefaster.com, it will ask a few questions, so we can, you know, for example, look at your website and see what you’re doing. We want to be ready for our call with you so that our time gets its highest and best use together. So, that’s the best way.
-
best way to do it.
