My Marketing was Destroyed by a Selfie Stick
There are SO many incredible promotional products but selfie sticks are not one of them. I have had reservations about using selfie sticks as a promotional product since the first time I saw one earlier this year, and events on the news confirmed it.
Picture a fire in New York City. Picture the cover of the New York Post. On that cover is a picture of several idiots who took the moment to take a picture of themselves – a selfie – and promoted it on social media. Now imagine if they said “Well, we all got selfie sticks from Promotionally Minded at a trade show. See? Their logo is right here.” It would have sucked to be the company who’s logo was on this stick. What about the Florida Man who was using a selfie stick and filmed his own accident? This accident was from an article was in Time Magazine. Imagine someone being in that publication for doing something dump, and in one sentence, the writer says that ‘the Florida man, who got the selfie stick from his local financial planner… ” and your practice is named.
There have been more than one “selfie” that has made the news for being
inappropriate. It has gotten so bad that large concerts and festivals are banning them. Here are two articles that talk about it:

I feel it is my job to point this out to you prior to you deciding to order this product. But this stems from a larger issue within the promotional products industry. That issue is choosing the right product for the right job. Part of the problem is, as I have stated many times, that the sales people within the promotional products industry are not all that interested in helping clients target their market, but in selling them the latest, cool thing.
“Yea, man, I want to strike while the iron is hot,” one competitor said to me. “It doesn’t matter – when they ask for the newest thing, I pull this out of my bag.”
Really? What if this selfie stick had your logo on it and this guy was using it while he was driving and his truck flipped?

It makes me want to bury my head in my hands. The “right promotional product” is not what is new. The “correct promotional product” is what will be considered useful and needed by the recipient.
